A visit to Rockall
Rockall is a very small island, 290 km from the nearest
land. In its isolated position in the middle of the North Atlantic
Ocean, it has some pretty terrible weather. It’s usually very cold
and windy, and the ocean often covers the island in water. People
don’t live on the island because there isn’t any water to drink and you
can’t grow food there.
So why is British man Nick Hancock planning to live there for two months?
Nick is an explorer, and loves being outdoors. Things like terrible
weather aren’t usually a problem for him. He first visited Rockall in
2012, and then decided to return there and live there. He organized
his visit for May 2013 and planned to stay for sixty days. He wanted
to raise money for charity. Nick wasn’t the first person to go to the
island. But he hoped to spend more time there than visitors before him.
His home for the visit was a small yellow box, one meter high and
about 2.5 meters long. The island is so small that you can’t walk on it,
but Nick hoped to get out of the box in mild weather and do some
physical exercise.
May 2013 came and went, but the visit didn’t happen. Terrible weather made it impossible for Nick to reach
the island and he returned home. However, Nick’s story isn’t finished. He and his yellow box are still waiting
for the right moment. And he hopes to travel to Rockall again soon.
