Topic: Cultural Practices (Word with Jai )

Jai is one of the most used words in Thai. This one word means
mind or heart but combined with other adjectives, verbs or
nouns, it usually means state of mind.
Word with Jai (heart)

1. Jai gwaang(wide) ---- generous


Ex. I like people who are generous / Phom or Chan chop kon jai
gwaang.

2. Jai keep----narrow, minded


Ex. Don’t be so narrow minded /Yaa jai keep.

3. Jai ron-----Temper, Impatient


Ex. I have temper. /Phom or Chan pen kon jai ron.
4. Jai yen----calm
Jai yen yen ---stay calm, whoa easy easy.
Ex. He/She is a calm person. Kao pen jai yen
5. Jai kaeng---hard-hearted
Ex. It’s hard to speak with such a hard-hearted person like this.

8. Jai dee----kind, nice
Ex.My mum is kind, she likes to help everyone.mae phom pen
kon jai dee, chop chuay leua tuk kon.

9. Jai raai----Mean
Ex. You are so mean to me. Kun jai raai gap phom maak.
10. Jai loi----absent-minded
Ex. The teacher talked for long and made many students absent-
minded. Kur poot naan gern pai tam hai nak-rian laai kon jai loi.

11. Dee jai----glad, happy


Ex. Everyone was ecstatic. Tik kon dee jai pen maak.
12. Lohng jai----relieved
Ex. His mother was relieved when she heard that he was safe.

13. Nok jai----unfaithful


Ex. She ended the relationship when she found out that he’d

jai.

14. Tok jai----scared, shocked


Ex. I was absolutely shocked. /Chan orPhom tok jai sut sut.

15. Siia jai----sorry, regret, sorrow


Ex. I am sorry that you lost your job. /Phom or Chan siia jai
tee kun tok ngaan.
16. Tat sin jai----decide
Ex. I can’t decide, it’s too hard! /Phom or Chan tat sin jai
mai daai.
17. Grayng jai---- to be considerate, to feel obligated
Ex. I feel bad. Phom or Chan grayng jai kun.
18. Taam jai---- to do as you wish as one like, spoil

Ex. Parents tend to spoil the youngest child. Por/mae mak ja

19. Plian jai---- change ones ‘mind
Ex. If you change your mind, tell me quickly. Taa kun plian jai
reep bok phom /chanh duay.
20. Pert jai----open-minded, heart to heart
Ex.you have to be a more open-minded. Kun tong pert jai hai
gwaang.

21. Plaek jai---- surprised


Ex. Everyone was surprised that he could do it. Tuk kon plaek
jai tee kao tam daai.
22. Wai jai----trust
Ex. Do you trust me? Kun wai jai chan/phom mai?
23. Haam jai---- suppress, control one’sfeeling
Ex. I can’t control myself to eat sweet food. Phom or Chan
haam jai mai daai tee ja kin ka nom waan.
24. Nae jai---- sure, certain
Ex. Are you sure not to go to school today. Kun nae jai mai
tee ja mai pai rohng rian wan nee.

25. Jing jai----sincere, honest


Ex. Are you honest with me? Kun jing jai gap phom/chan
mai?
