THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction and Background of the Study

Ever since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, computers became a vital

part of learning among students. In this research, we will discuss the impact of

computer literacy on the academics of grade 11 ICT students of Japan Philippine

Institute of Technology, San Jose branch. First of all, what is Computer Literacy?

According to Dictionary.com, Computer Literacy is basic, nontechnical

knowledge about computers and how to use them; such as familiarity and

experience with computers, software, and computer systems. This is very

important knowledge that all students should know because now technology

became a very important part of our learning system, and even just the basic

knowledge about computers can be a huge help to everyone.

This research aimed to investigate and analyze the impact of computer

literacy on grade 11 students of Japan Philippines Institute of Technology. A

twenty-item questionnaire was given to a selected grade 11 TVL ICT students of

the JPI San Jose branch.

Theoretical Framework

This research’s main purpose is to investigate the impact of computer

literacy on the academics of grade 11 ICT students of the Japan Philippines

Institute of Technology. The study was conducted at Japan Philippine Institute of

Technology, JAG Bldg., EVR Road, Purok 7, Brgy. San Pedro, Area F, Sapang

Palay, CSJDM Bulacan where the researchers are studying. This research is

anchored by two(2) theories. The Digital Theory (2008) by Reynolds, and the

Skill Theory(2010) by Mbaeze, Ukwandu, & Anugu.

Theory no. 1 Digital Theory: It is the theory that the internet can help

students learn more effectively.

Theory no. 2 Skill Theory: The theory that focuses on how skill is

important, especially in K-12 education, and possessing the real world beyond

the classroom.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to answer how computer literacy impacted the grade 11

TVL ICT students of the JPI San Jose branch.

This research study also seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the basic knowledge that you know about computer literacy?

2. How does computer literacy affect the academic performance of grade 11

ICT students of the JPI San Jose branch?

3. What are the factors affecting computer literacy?

1. Was it the lack of computer experience?

2. Was it the lack of computer knowledge?

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will cover the impact of computer literacy on the academics of

grade 11 ICT students of Japan Philippine Institute of Technology, San Jose

branch. The data that will be gathered is from the grade 11 ICT students of

Japan Philippine Institute of Technology, San Jose branch, but, the participants

of this study will be conducted from selected grade 11 ICT students. The

researchers will give them a 20-item survey questionnaire to find out the impact

of computer literacy on their academics. The only focus of this study was the

impact of computer literacy on the academics of grade 11 ICT students. This will

not cover other topics that are related to technology.

Significance of the Study:

This research is made with the aim to provide crucial information and

knowledge regarding the impact of computer literacy on the academics of grade

11 ICT students of Japan Philippine Institute of Technology, San Jose branch.

The respondents may benefit from this research as its findings may encourage

them to use and understand computers, and this research can also be used as a

reference for future researchers.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Foreign Literature

According to Lai (2015) and McLoughlin and Lee (2010), Outside of the

classroom, teachers can impact students' behavior regarding the use of

technology by providing encouragement and emotional support, resource

recommendations, homework involving the use of technical resources, and

direction on how to use technological resources for learning. According to this

study, teachers can truly help students enhance their understanding of how to

utilize technology so that they can apply it when they progress to a higher level.

The results also signified that the greater the extent of their computer literacy in

said areas, the higher their academic performance. This implied that classroom

intervention activities are imperative to enhance the extent of the student's

computer literacy. The computer helps a lot of students, to those who work in the

call center, this is what they use to talk to other people in different places here,

where they can get information and the answer you want to know.

Foreign Studies

According to Staff Writer(2018), computer literacy is a must for all

students, especially those in senior high school. The use of books has been

reduced to a bare minimum. Senior high school students are required to have

and use a computer or tablet for browsing, searching, and serving as an Ebook.

It is very important for senior high school to have a broader knowledge of using

technology so that it can be a tool as they step up to a higher level. According to

Darolia (2014) and Erten and Burden (2014), it is recognized that the better the

school performance, the greater the chance of success for the students.

Moreover, computer literacy has the potential to improve lifelong learning.

Li and Lee (2016) defined computer literacy as the fundamental condition for the

technology learning environment. Thus, this has been a topic of various

educational research (Link and Marz, 2006).

Local Literature

Learners who have access to information and communication technology

(ICT) perform better. The descriptive-correlational analysis was used by Cadiz-

Gabejan and Taakenaka (2021).

Local Studies

Furthermore, when the pandemic strikes the Department of

Education(DepEd) and other educational institutions have implemented distance

learning to continue the education of the learners. Education during the

pandemic gives difficult not just for students but also for the government where it

worsens the technological inequalities among students. In addition, distance

learning is bad for children across the country, but it could be

particularly

dangerous for those with little computer proficiency (Santos,2016).

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter covers the research method used, the instrument used and

procedures to formulate the research, and how the instruments were developed.

Method of Research

The explanatory research design is used in this study. It is a research

method that usually answers the question "why?" especially when there's only

limited information is available. It will focus on the impact of computer literacy on

the grade 11 students of Japan Philippine Institute of Technology San Jose

branch. Survey questionnaires are used to gather and evaluate the data on the

issue.

Population:

The respondents that will be involved in this research will consist of only

twenty-five (25) grade 11 ICT students from the JPI San Jose branch

Sample Size, and Sampling Technique

This study used a purposive sampling technique. It is a technique by

which the researchers select a sample based on the participant’s intent. The

researcher believes that by using judgment and observation, they can obtain a

purposive sample. The impact of computer literacy on grade 11 ICT students of
