Let Us Learn!
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here
to help you master the process on solving problems involving
trigonometric ratio.

After going through this module, the learner is expected to:

• illustrates the six trigonometric ratios;
• finds the values of the six trigonometric ratios given the sides of a
right triangle;
• finds the remaining trigonometric ratio given one trigonometric ratio;
• identifies the formula for the missing parts of a right triangle; and
• uses a calculator in solving problems involving trigonometric ratios.

Let Us Study

In a right triangle, we can define trigonometric ratios. Consider the right

triangle ABC below. In this triangle we let θ represent angle A. Then the leg
denoted by b is the side adjacent to θ and the leg denoted by a is the side
opposite to θ. Then the hypotenuse is the longest side of the triangle.

Trigonometric relationships
There are six trigonometric ratios, sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant,
secant and cotangent. These six trigonometric ratios are abbreviated as sin
θ, cos θ, tan θ, csc θ, sec θ, cot θ.
These are referred to as ratios since they can be expressed in terms of
the sides of a right-angled triangle for a specific angle θ or the angle A.

Let Us Reflect

Trigonometry may not have its direct applications in solving

practical issues, but it is used in various things that we enjoy so
much. For example, music, as you know sound travels in waves
and this pattern though not as regular as a sine or cosine
function, is still useful in developing computer music. A computer
cannot obviously listen to and compre hend music as we do, so
computers represent it mathematically by its constituent sound
waves. And this means sound engineers need to know at least the
basics of trigonometry. And the good music that these sound
engineers produce is used to calm us from our hectic, stress full
life – All thanks to trigonometry.

Let Us Study

A right triangle is a triangle in which one angle is a right angle. The

relationship between the sides and angles of a right triangle is the basis for
trigonometry. Trigonometric ratios are used in solving or finding the missing
sides or angles of a right triangle.

The Six Trigonometric Ratios are sine, cosine, tangent, secant,

cosecant and cotangent. The six ratios relate the sides of a right triangle
to its angles. Specifically, they are ratios of two sides of a right triangle and a
related angle. Trigonometric ratios are used to calculate unknown lengths or
angles in a right triangle.

SINE is the ratio of the length of the opposite side and the hypotenuse.
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
sin θ =ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒

COSINE is the ratio of the length of the adjacent side and the hypotenuse.
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
cos θ =
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒

TANGENT is the ratio of the length of the opposite side and the adjacent side.
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
tan θ = 𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡

COSECANT is the ratio of the length of the hypotenuse and opposite side and
the reciprocal of sine.
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
csc A = 𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒

SECANT is the ratio of the length of the hypotenuse and adjacent side the
reciprocal of cosine.
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
sec A = 𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡

COTANGENT is the ratio of the length of the adjacent side and the opposite
side the reciprocal of tangent.

Let Us Reflect

Math and science relate to everyday life, just like reading and
writing, and understanding a language. They are tools to manage in life. You
may decide you do not need some of those tools, but what you do not know
could hurt you. If you decide you do not need to learn to speak and
understand the language most people speak where you live, that lack of
knowledge will limit severely limit you. Not caring about trigonometric ratios
will not limit your everyday life that horribly, but it is limiting to a lesser
degree. Those ratios are useful on real life. Their names may not be as
useful, but they expand your vocabulary, and at least help you graduate
from school. You already have had to learn so many words to get by in life.
Math does not require learning too many words. I believe it requires a los
less than teachers throw at you, but the important words stay in your head.
I remember sine, cosine, and tangent, but when I need, I look up many
other math words that I once learned (for the test) and then forgot.

A ratio of sides helps you figure out if your ramp meets the ADA
requirements for handicapped accessibility. A carpenter taught me that.
Trigonometric ratios also let you figure out the length of distances you
cannot directly measure. A hunter trying to shoot a deer with an arrow from
a tree stand cares about them.
