OVERVIEW
You will use the concepts of congruents sides and angles as we classify
quadrilaterals in this lesson.
Thales of Miletus, amazed his tour guides when he told them the height
of the great pyramid of cheops was 160 paces. Thales was only told that
the dimension of the squares base is 252 paces along each side.
Perhaps aside from the builders, no one had known its height. And even
dragging a rope all the way up to the top, this measure will only give the
pyramid's sloping side.
How do you think did Thales come up with the height of the pyramid? Given Trigonometric ratio Read as
Recall that a right triangle has one right angle and two acute angles. sin θ sine theta
Opposite the right angle is the hypotenuse which is the longest side of
the triangle.
ABC is a right triangle with angle C as its right angle; the acute cos θ cosine theta
angles are angle A and angle B; the hypotenuse is AB, and the legs are
AC and BC.
tan θ tangent theta
By the AA similarity theorem for triangles, all right triangles with a given
equal acute angle are similar. Recall that for similar triangles, the lengths
of corresponding sides are proportional. Thus, with your given measure csc θ cosecant theta
of ∠ A in the right , the ratios are constant regardless of the size of
thee triangle. Using the calculator, we found out that

How may possible ratios can be formed out of the three sides of a right ¿ TOA means tan θ=
triangle? Can you name them? adjacent leg
Note: The word sine comes from the Sanskrit word jiva meaning chord- EXAMPLE 1 Find the values of the trigonometric ratios of θ in the
half, but because it was abbreviated as jya, it was later shortened to jb. trianlge
This was substituted with jaib, which means cove or bay. The Latin
equivalent of cove or bay is sinus, where our present word sine is
derived.
