ACTIVITY

SKEWNESS AND NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

Find the skewness coefficient of the scores of 40 Education students in a 100-

item diagnostic test in Assessment of Learning 2. The mean is 60.93, the
median is 56, and the standard deviation is 18.26. State the interpretation of
this result.

Mean x = 60.93 FORMULA SK = 3(X-X)

Median x = 56 S
Standard Deviation = 18.26

Solution:

Sk= 3 (60.93-56)
18.26

= 3 (4.93) = 14.79 = 0.81

18.26 18.26

The skewness coefficient of the score of the 40 students in a 100-item test is 0.81,
which indicate that this is POSITIVELY SKEWED DISTRIBUTION, most of the score are
low; hence, the student performance is poor and the test is difficult. I conclude also that
the SK = 0.81 is positively skewed because the SK is greater than 0.
