Given the types of tests below, state some rules that should be considered by providing specific
examples for every rule.

A. MATCHING TYPE
Rule 1: Match homogenous not heterogenous items. The items to match must be
homogenous.
Example:

B. MULTIPLE CHOICE TYPE

Rule 2: Do not use modifiers that are vague and whose meaning can differ from one
person to next such as, much, often, usually etc.

Example:
Usually used social media platforms in the Philippines?

Correct: The most used social Media Platforms in the Philippines?

D. Twitter

Rule 3: Avoid complex or award word arrangement. Also, avoid use of negative in stem as
this may add unnecessary comprehension difficulties.

Example:

When Rizal excelled as a Top student of Ateneo de Manila, he loved reading books and
novels. Among the books, he read a novel by Alexander Dumas. This was the First Novel
that he loved, what was it?

Correct: Which novel by Alexander Dumas did Rizal most enjoy reading?

Rule 8: The length, explicitness, or degree of technicality of alternatives should not be the
determinants of the correctness of the answer

C. TRUE OR FALSE TYPE

Rule 1: Do not give hint (inadvertently) in the body of the question


Example: Hint
Manila is the home to the famous Rizal Park and is the capital of the Philippines as well.
Correct: Manila is the home of the famous Rizal Park.

Rule 2: Avoid using the word “always, never, and other words that lend to either always
true or false
Example:
Children always have emotional problems after their parents’ divorce.
Correct: Children have emotional problems after their parents’ divorce

Rule 3: Avoid long sentences as these lend to be True. Keep sentence short
Example:
Bohol sea is found north of Mindanao and south of the Visayan Islands. It entirely
surrounds the island provinces of Camiguin and Siquijor. It is also named after an island
province lying just north of it.
Correct: Bohol Sea is found north of Mindanao and south of the Visayan islands.

Rule 8: Avoid Double negative. This makes test item unclear and definitely confused the
student
Example:
Aspirin is not an illegal drug
Correct: Aspirin is an illegal drug
D. ESSAY TYPE

Rule 1: Phrase the direction in such a way that students are guided on the key
Concepts to be included. Specify how students should respond.
Example:
Many parts of the world are losing important natural resources; such as forests,
animals, or clean water. Choose one resource that is disappearing and explain why it needs to be
saved. Used specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Rule 2: Inform Students on the criteria to be used for grading their essays this rule
allows the student to focus on relevant and substantive materials rather than peripheral and
unnecessary facts and bits of information.

Example:

Write an Essay about the Cause of Global Warming and Describe the impact of
global warming on climate related disasters. You will be graded according to the following
criteria, a. Coherence b. Sentence Structure c. Focus and details d. Original Ideas

Rule 3: Put time limit on the essay


Example:
In at less than 300 words, what is the Importance of mobile phone to the student,
compare the advantage and disadvantage of the mobile phone.

Rule 4: Decide on your essay grading system prior to getting the essay of your
students.
