I. Directions: Open your internet connection and search the word genetically modified organism. List down
the genetically modified crops, fruits and vegetables. Look for the desirable traits of the GMO products, also
what are the inserted genome to make it more available to people.

Quiz No. 10

Instruction: Answer the following questions in not less than five sentences each. Your answers will be
graded according to:
Content - 3 pts
Coherence of idea - 2 pts
TOTAL - 5 pts

1. Based on experiences, what is the current public perception on GMOs?

Based on my experience, they are completely safe to consume, but there are concerns about whether
some modified plants, if released into the wild, would disrupt the local environment because they have
been altered to fend off pests that prevent the development of their unmodified neighbors. But since we
transplant plants into places where they are not natural, this is a problem that affects all human-produced
crops to some extent.

2. Discuss at least two benefits of GMOs.

One of the benefits of GMOs is the greater farming efficiency. Through the use of GMOs,
pesticide/herbicide-tolerant crops are developed, meaning that fewer crops are harmed when pesticides
and herbicides are used to get rid of invasive species and pests. That results in a higher rate of harvested
crops. Another benefits of GMOs is the Improvement of Desired Qualities. The main goal of GMOs is to
create better products with more desirable features. Through GMOs, we may produce/reduce specific
enzymes, increase color and flavor, extend shelf life, and achieve other desired characteristics.

3. Discuss at least potential risks of GMOs.

One of the potential risk of GMOs is some people have seen allergic reactions after consuming GMO
products, which they assume are a result of gene modification. Food is believed to undergo mutation and
abnormal development through alteration in addition to acquiring the desirable properties. Another
potential risk of GMOs is the ability to produce human genetic information was believed to lead to the
misuse of power by those who hold the information, putting those who don't at a disadvantage. These
potential hazards were also highlighted in terms of improper handling of GMOs.

4. If given a seat in the senate will you or will you not publish a bill in advantage of production of GMOs?
Why?

5
If i given a seat in the senate, i will publish a bill in advantage of production of GMOs. We can improve
varieties by selection. Planting the seeds of those plants that have the desired qualities. That takes time,
but we have been doing that a long time. So long, that some plants don’t look at all now like they
originally looked. That is the slow way to modify genetics. I know there are a lot of issues with corn and
soybean crops that have been genetically modified so that those plants will not be killed. But I don’t see
that has a valid reason not to use our gains in science for producing bigger yields and controlling
competition at a lower cost.
