RECOVERY/CONVALESCENCE
Understanding recovery diets for dogs
• When the dog is recovering from illness or surgery it’s important to
feed a food designed to support rapid healing and immune system.

• Recovery diets are designed to fulfill dog’s special nutritional

needs.

• Advisable to feed little and often, dividing the daily amount into
several portions.
Conditions requiring rehabilitation diets
Rehabilitation diets are formulated to provide nutritional support for the debilitated,
stressed or traumatised dog or for those with high energy needs.

• Anorexia

• Malnutrition

• Inability to eat/Swallow (Mouth or throat problems)

• Stress following surgery, injury or ill health

Nutritional structure (Macro and Micronutrients )

Protein
• Proteins are the major building blocks in the repair process and are
important in maintaining the immune system.

• These proteins helps to fight infections during the crisis situation.

• An increased protein level promotes restoration of lean body mass

and increases palatability during the postoperative period.
Fats and carbohydrates
• Fats and carbohydrates are excellent sources of energy.

• These required in larger amounts than normal for repairing the tissues
affected by illness, injury or surgery and to fight infection.

• Increasing the energy density of the feed by addition of fats. So that

dog can get more energy by consuming the smaller amount of feed.
Conti…
• Zinc and potassium are added to improve wound healing.

• Increased potassium level to combat depletion.

• The synergistic antioxidant complex (vitamin E, vitamin C, taurine and lutein)

helps neutralize free radicals produced during body metabolism and promotes
good health of the immune system.

• Highly digestible ingredients compensate for the decreased activity of intestinal

enzymes, ensuring enough nutrients can still be absorbed by the patient.
Conti…
• Omega-3 long chain fatty acids help maintain joint mobility, skin
health and digestion.

• Chondroitin helps slow the breakdown of joint cartilage (especially

important in the older patient).

• Glucosamine stimulates the production of the components of joint

cartilage.
Key benefits of the diet
• Highly digestible and easy to feed, High acceptance & overcomes
anorexia.

• Helps in reducing stress induced from illness, injury by increasing food

acceptance.

• Aids in Quick healing & Recovery of Dogs & Cats.

• Smooth Moist consistency improves food palatability and digestibility.
