A. Short Answer

Answer the following questions concisely. (5 points each)

1. Do you think the pursuit of GMO research should stop? Why or why not?

In my own opinion, the pursuit of GMO research should not stop because there are side effects of it
that is not yet 100% confirmed, therefore there are some problems that can still occur anytime and
if happens, it could affect human’s health negatively like allergy. At the same time, scientists
revealed evidence of the possibility of accidental and unexpected changed in GMO. Thus, they
should pursue to continue to search more about GMO effects and other factors because I believe
with GMO, there are still positive effects that can help us in our daily lives especially those
laborers that use food crops and other products that has been tested with GMO which made their
work easier and product better.

2. Is genetic engineering a purely scientific process, or is it indeed an act as humans

playing God? Explain your answer.

In my own opinion, genetic engineering is a purely scientific process and not an act as humans
playing God because genetic engineering is merely modifying what was already there, scientists
use genetic engineering to innovate and improve the product. In contrast, God created everything
from scratch. Aside from that, the process of generic engineering is based on scientific research
by scientists which took numerous trials, tests and research unlike how God created things in the
world. Therefore, genetic engineering’s purpose is to just improve and innovate what God has
created, not merely creating a new product or thing.
B. GMO Profiling

Profile at least five (5) GMOs in your locality. Identify all the modified characteristics and
provide an original photo (a photograph taken by you) for each organism. You may utilize the
template below. (10 points each)

Common Name: Potato

Scientific Name: Solanum Tuberosum
Modified Characteristics:
It includes introducing pest resistance, tweaking
the amounts of certain chemicals produced by the plant,
and hides the symptoms of blackspot bruising rather
than preventing it.

Common Name: Banana

Scientific Name: Musa
Modified Characteristics:
It resists a bacterial wilting disease and pest
species that are devastating the critical food crop in
tropical regions across the planet. Their thick skin
prevents chemicals from being absorbed in the banana
flesh, keeping all bananas off the dirty dozen list. These
bananas have higher levels of Vitamin A.
Common Name: Banana
Scientific Name: Zea Mays
Modified Characteristics:
It is created to resist insect pests or tolerate
herbicides. It that produces proteins that are toxic to
certain insect pests but not to humans, pets, livestock,
or other animals. Corn that has been modified can last
longer without the need for preservatives, which are
chemicals added to the food to increase their shelf life.
Corn that is grown for ethanol production could
produce a higher overall yield. For the corn we eat, it
could be grown to taste better. It can be infused with
additional nutritional benefits.

Common Name: Lettuce

Scientific Name: Lactuca Sativa

Modified Characteristics:
GMO is the wonderful, tactical, and great tasting
lettuce that incorporates the dressing of many types into
the lettuce itself. The lettuce has both the taste of the
lettuce and the taste of the dressing. It also can help in
healing bone fracture.

Common Name: Papaya

Scientific Name: Carica papaya

Modified Characteristics:
It may be able to resist disease such as ringspot
virus. Disease- and drought-resistant plants that require
fewer environmental resources (such as water and
fertilizer). Increased supply of food with reduced cost,
longer shelf life and tastier. Faster growing plants and
animals.
