1.1 ABSTRACT

Speaking skills are seen as one of the important skills that the

students must have. However, many of the students still avoid speaking in

the target language because of many factors. Many students also feel

unmotivated in learning speaking because of a monotonous teaching

process. Students need an effective medium which is also motivational

for improving their speaking skills. In choosing the medium, the teacher

should consider the students’ characteristic, and one of the students

characteristic in this era is they are digital natives. Because of that,

digital storytelling is considered as suitable teaching medium.

Digital storytelling is the combination of spoken narrative, a number

of digital picture, soundtrack, and new technology to share the story.

Therefore, this research aims to describe how to implement the medium

to teaching speaking skills, especially in retelling a story and analyze the

extent of the use of digital storytelling to improve the students’ speaking

skills.

This research used classroom action research. The participants of

this research were 24 students of XI MIPA class of SMA NW Anjani. The

research instruments were observation checklists, speaking pre-test and

post-test, questionnaires, and interviews.

This research used two cycles of action research. There were four

stages in each cycle, namely planning, acting, developing, and reflecting.

The result showed that there was significant improvement from the result

of the pre-test and post-test. The mean score of the pre-test was 62,13,

besides; the mean score of the post-test was 82,21. The result of

questionnaires and interviews indicated that the digital storytelling

improve their speaking skills as well.

In conclusion, the digital storytelling was successful in improving

the students’ speaking skills. Since digital storytelling is presented in

fascinating and interesting way, it can be an effective medium to teach

speaking. As recommendation, digital storytelling can be used as one of

the sources in learning English.
