Clamp Truck

Clamp attachments for lift trucks were originally designed

to clamp cotton bales and large heavy rolls of paper

Packaging design and dimensions were critical to clamp

handling

Module had to be large enough to create sufficient friction to

hold the cases in a load together during clamp compression

Containers within the load had to have sufficient

compression resistance in their walls to withstand the
pressure of the clamps without creasing or damaging the
product

Shipping posed a key problem for clamped loads.

Clamping today is widely used for the inside storage of many

kinds of products, but it has achieved only limited applications for
unitized shipping.

Pallet and Slipsheets

The use of pallets for the shipment of raw materials and other
goods that did not enjoy the free return privilege of exchange
system pallets

The feasibility of adapting the slipsheet method to widespread use

throughout the industry. The key concerns included:

• Cost justification for the purchase of lift-truck push-pull

attachments to handle slipsheets
• Potential productivity losses that could result in additional
lift trucks and operators.
• Receiver acceptance of the slipsheet method
• Durability of slipsheets for transport of unit loads
• Adaptation of the slipsheet method to mechanical handling
equipment
• Unit load preparation and the packaging techniques would
have to be changed.

Transport packaging selection

• The economic justification for

containerized shipments of raw materials is
related to the kind of material and the
volume shipped.

• Thick, heavy-duty slipsheets were used

under some loads to enable lift-truck fork
tines to chisel in under the loads to lift
and transfer them onto pallets.

• Pallets simplified materials handling but

were not the ideal carrying base for bulk
containers

• It was found that some materials shipped

in burlap sacks or cloth and paper bags
could be converted to containerized bulk
handling in large, plastic fabric bags.
