01 Rotational direction
of the planets
Planets rotation
All planets in the solar system rotate on their axis at different angles.
From west to east : Mercury, Earth , Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune
From east to west : Venus
Rotates on its sides : Uranus

Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune

Why do these two planets have
different rotational direction as
compared to other planets?
Uranus was likely hit by a very large planetoid early in its
history, causing it to rotate "on its side," 90 degrees away
from its orbital motion. Venus rotates backwards
compared to the other planets, also likely due to an early
asteroid hit which disturbed its original rotation.
Hypothetical Situation
related to the Solar
System
What happens if the rotation of the Earth
slows down or stops completely?

Longer day and night More desert areas in parts

duration in two different of the Earth that faces the
parts of sun Sun

Change in high and low Temperature will drop in

tides areas of the Earth that do
not receive sunlight
What are natural satellites?
Natural satellites are objects that move around planets on
their own orbit. The only natural satellites of earth is MOON!
How would the condition and appearance
of the Earth be from the Moon?
Moon rotates on its own axis and also moves around the
Earth on its orbit.

The duration taken for the Moon to rotate on its axis

and orbit the Earth is about the same, which is 27
days. Thus, the same surface of the Moon would be
facing the Earth at all times.

The Earth is four times bigger than the Moon. This is

the appearance of the Earth from the Moon.
Datuk Dr. Mazlan Othman
She is a well known in the field of research and development of
astronomy in Malaysia. She is the first astrophysicist in Malaysia. She
create a curriculum in astrophysics at the national university, as well as
to build public awareness and understanding of astronomy and space
issues.

She was born in Negeri Sembilan and attended a Malaysian

prominent boarding school in Seremban, Kolej Tunku
Kurshiah, Her aptitude for mathematics led to enrolment in a
science curriculum. She attended the University of Otago in
Dunedin, New Zealand earning a BSc in 1975. She then
extended her scholarship and returned to Otago, earning her
Ph.D in physics in 1981, the first woman to do so since the
University was founded in 1869.
The Earth as a Planet for
Living Things
The Earth is the only planet that has life.
This is because of few factors:
● The presence of water
● The presence of minerals
● Temperature
● Atmospheric content
Characteristics of the Earth
Gravity Atmosphere
Has gravity that keeps Its atmosphere blocks
object from floating harmful ultraviolet rays
from reaching the Earth

Water Oxygen content

Has a lot of water for Has high oxygen content
all living processes for respiratory process

Suitable
Sunlight
Temperature Range
Receives sunlight for Has a suitable temperature
plants to conduct range, not too hot or too cold
photosynthesis
Are there other planets that are suitable for life?
Quite simply, there isn’t one. So we had better not destroy the Earth, or leave it to be destroyed on
our watch.

Mercury? No atmosphere, way too close to the sun, and tidally locked.

Venus? Temperatures are high enough to melt steel, sulphuric acid rain and incredible pressure.

Mars? Cold and arid, with a very thin atmosphere and no oxygen. No protection from dangerous
radiation.

Jupiter? Massive, turbulent gas planet with incredible gravity and no surface.

Saturn: Like Jupiter, just a bit smaller.

Uranus? Another gas giant, with an axis of rotation that’s just plain weird. And, so cold.

Neptune? Yet another gas giant. And even colder than Uranus.

Moons? All lacking a proper atmosphere except for one: Titan. Titan? Far too cold.

Love Our Earth
Are the Earth’s natural resources able to sustain
the increasing needs and wants of humans?
Ecological Footprint
The measure of

needs of humans (food, water, shelter and treatment areas
others) The ratio Construction

wastes and produce resources after they have for six areas

the Earth to renew its resources, the Earth will
