My decision to study a postgraduate degree Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was

influenced by the increasing Environmental problems of the world specifically Africa

continent without any proper means to manage them and also my quest to develop the
technical abilities to solve these issues. To me, studying postgraduate degree in Geographic
Information Systems is not just about discovering the complexities of this field but rather an
opportunity to make a lifetime difference. Living in a country Ghana where issues of
environmental disorder are usually at the forefront of the media, the thought to solve them is
the initial motivator to study this degree.

As a graduate of the Department of Geography and Rural Development specifically in the

field of Environmental management and GIS from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science
and Technology, expanding my knowledge on how to apply Geographic Information Systems
to solve pressing environmental challenges in Ghana will be of help by making the
environment safer for living. During my undergraduate years, I have conducted series of GIS-
based researches and analysis including, ‘Assessing the average annual soil loss in the
Central Region of Ghana’. These researches enabled me to learn how to critically analyse
data. It also helped me develop important skills such as organization, meeting deadlines and
more essentially how to work with other colleagues to achieve set goals.

Courses such as Applied Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing, Principles
of Cartography, Interpretation and Fundamental of Surveying, and workshops and seminars
in which I participated predisposed me to the connection between Geographic Information
System and Environmental management.

Apart from academic activities, I have played so many roles in student leadership. Becoming
the Vice-President of Geography Students’ Association enabled me develop and acquire
certain qualities and skills such as strategic thinking, how to properly plan and manage
situations and meeting targets. As a student leader, I consistently organize and monitor
activities as well as attending meetings. These qualities demonstrate my ability to work
effectively and efficiently with other people no matter their background.

Finally, I have reckoned that choosing the right program is not an end in itself but the ability
to identify an institution that can make you harness your potential is equally paramount.
University of Leeds is a world-renowned institution and noted for its high contribution to
global knowledge and research. I chose University of Leeds among others because of my
understanding of how well its Geographic Information Systems’ course is structured and also
how the course aligns with my career goals as well as the serene and hospitable academic
environment it has created for students over the years. I look forward to having a peaceful
stay in Leeds while pursuing my postgraduate degree.

In sum, I am very enthusiastic and motivated individual who is committed to making the
world more safe and sustainable. The opportunity to broaden my knowledge in this field will
enable me take a step closer to achieving this important goal and I am ready for the challenge.
