My name is [………]and I’m applying to your PHD program in GEOGRAPHIC

INFORMATION SYSTEMS. My decision to study for an advance degree in

Geographical Information Systems(GIS) was informed by the desire to develop a
better understanding of the entire process of acquiring, managing, interpreting, and
analyzing geographical information. A year of professional work experience in
obtaining and managing geographical information at the the university for
development studies as a teaching assitant has given me the basic knowledge and
understanding of this increasingly important area. But I feel that my dream of
building a career in GIS would be easily realized if I get myself equipped with both
the ability to critically understand GIS theories and practices, and also with the
understanding of advance technical skills used by modern GIS practitioners. As a
graduate of the department of Environment and Resource from the univernisity for
development studies and a masters degree graduate in urnbanization and
environmental problems from Gazi University, I have continually sorted out
innovative techniques that could enhance the proper planning of most of the poorly
planned cities in my country. This search however lead to my internship with
university for development studies as a teaching assitant where I was actively
involved in the collection of geographical information such as the location of solid
waste bins in Ghana, and the mapping of some irigation dams in Ghana using GPS
tools. Apart from being eager to develop new town planning methods for my
country, I am very much interested in helping young students in my country . I have
mentored and had also organized tutorial sessions on how to apply geographic
information system in our World today for some of my course mates. This
demonstrates my ability to work effectively with others. And on completion of my
PHD course in Instanbul Technical University I look forward to teaching advance
GIS techniques to students and other dvelopment pratitioners in Ghana. My
decision to pick Instanbul University for my PHD studies was born out of my
understanding that its GIS course is well-structured and have practical oriented
modules such as Applying GIS, GIS and spatial Analysis, GIS and Statistical
Modelling, among others. My decision was also informed by the relatively peaceful
and friendly nature of Turkey towards people of color and other cultures. At this
stage, I look forward to having a wonderful university experience and also to my
personal development as an individual. It is my belief that I possess the zeal and
critical reasoning ability required for a PHD program in Instanbul Technical
University, and I am ready for the challenge.
