Subject: Statement of Purpose for MSc in Geographical

Information Science.

My decision to study for an advance degree in

Geographical Information Science was informed by the desire to
develop a better understanding of the entire process of acquiring,
managing, interpreting, and analyzing geographical information.
Geographic Information plays an increasingly predominant role
in many areas of our lives: environmental protection, business
and marketing, communications, forecasting, modelling,
agriculture, and local and regional planning. Understanding GI
systems and GI Science is essential for effective management
and analysis of spatial data. Therefore, I crave to chase my
desire with this wonderful course.

Following my successful completion of Bachelor of

Geology at National College of Arts and Science,
Tiruchirappalli afflicted with Bharathidasan University
during 2021 with 7.85 CGPA. As a geology student I have
learned about a range of topics such as the origins and
development of landscapes, earthquakes, volcanoes,
sustainability, glaciers, water composition and process, floods
groundwater flow, the interaction between humans and planets.
Apart from the subject matter my university provides many
experiential educational projects and outdoor visits, it aided a
major exposure to real working environments along with a
practical perspective of a theoretical concept relevant to my
domain. This program bestowed me with a comprehensive
understanding of the amalgamation of problem-solving abilities
and planning skills, along with the leadership qualities. I have
completed my school education from Sri Vinayag Higher
Secondary School, Namakkal during 2018 with 62.66% and I
completed my SSLC from Green Park Higher Secondary
School, Namakkal during 2016 with 73%. I am a determined
and ambitious individual, and I like to be kept busy with a
challenging work load. Being meticulous, passionate and
focused, enables me to concentrate on any given task and
complete it with efficiency and excellence. My aim is to gain
control over my efficiency and leave no gap in my
accomplishments.

Being a devoted learner, I am always on the lookout for

new opportunities to learn and gather more knowledge in my
field of specialization. Life is a continual leaning process and
nowhere is this more abundant than in challenges. I love facing
challenges positively and believe in working hard to fulfil all my
goals. From a young age, I have been focused on my future
goals and carried out academic duties sincerely throughout
college and school alike. I have attended many workshops,
seminars and outdoor educational visits. But I feel that my
dream of building a career in planning and development
surveyor would be easily realized if I get myself equipped with
both the ability to critically understand GIS theories and
practices, and also with the understanding of advance technical
skills used by modern GIS practitioners. To realize my
destinations, I should learn more about the challenges facing by
the today’s planning and development surveyors, analytical and
numerical skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills,
networking, presentation, creative and innovative approach,
financial viability, good commercial awareness and a sense of
ethical responsibility are the important fields in which I want to
deepen my knowledge. With this objective in perception, I
have chosen to study this course. My aim is to gain control
over my efficiency and leave no gap in my accomplishments.
After evaluation the dissimilarity of education method in India
and overseas, I found it better to opt for an institution outside
India.
 My predominant reason for selecting UK for advanced
studies is the excellence of education provided by academia. As
a business-friendly nation, UK offers and education with ample
emphasis on practical learning. This makes international higher
education accessible to student like me. I have also found that
the land of UK is safe for people from all countries and culture. I
further analyzed an evaluated various college as well. I have now
decided. When I looked for the right institution in UK I found,
the University of Leicester, it is one of the globally acclaimed
universities in the world for these disciplines and one the leading

The facilities are world class and will eminently suit my needs.
Owing to the location, excellent faculty and opportunities for
research, I have chosen this institution over others in the
country and elsewhere. Furthermore, I was very happy to
noticed that the university was named University of the Year of
2008 by the Times Higher Education. It is also the only
university ever to have won a Time Higher Education award in
seven consecutive years. This program has the accreditation of
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. This shows the
assurance of the quality of the course. It will be a privilege
studying in a reputed institution of this stature.

This MSc program helps me to analyses patterns in Earth’s

atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and geosphere. I can
examine both historic and recent changes in the natural
environment. By learning this course, I can develop skills in
geographic information science, cartography, remote sensing,
and world language. Leicester’s MSc program offers an
excellent understanding of spatial patterns. This MSc course
will equip me to make the move into the fast-paced world of
geographic atmosphere with a degree designed to give up-to-the
-minute knowledge of topography issues and enhance my
employability in the global career market. The course provides
comprehensive higher educational knowledge, and workforce
training programs through the development of a range of
specific geographical knowledge including Fundamentals of
GIS, R for Data Science, Geographical Visualisation,
Remote sensing, Geospatial Data Analytics, Geospatial
Databases and Information Retrieval these are some unique
areas of management organisation and without knowledge of
these branches, I will remain incomplete leading to incapacity to
deal with matters when in profession. This module
‘Fundamentals of GIS’ will provide a broad introduction to the
fundamental aspects of GIS in terms of theory, sourcing data,
and using software. Through this lecture I can cover data
models, data visualization and creating maps, spatial databases,
network analysis, GIS and the internet, and automation of data
processing and analysis. Geographical Visualisation this
program will help me to cover fundamental issues such as the
nature of visual variables, map generalization, web mapping,3D
visualization, and virtual and augmented realities. Amongst
other things, I will learn how to use Esir’s ArcMap online
product to build story maps using qualitative and quantitative
data, the programming side to visualization using the R language
and how to create visualisations for out Oculus Rift virtual
reality headset that links with our large screen virtual reality
laboratory. Through this I will learn key skills in: using a range
of GI software; scientific programming; dealing with the growth
in data from social media and the internet; and, analyzing spatial
data in the broader context of data science. Alongside the core
modules, I will have the opportunity to specialize in areas such
as environmental health, remote sensing and earth observation,
visualization, and field data capture. All the above-mentioned
modules will make me ready to take up career with confidence
and charisma- this includes improved self-awareness,
responsibility for own actions, critical thinking ability, effective
time management, pursuance skills, leadership, creativity and
other personal development. At this stage, I look forward to
having a wonderful university experience and also to my
personal development as an individual. It is my belief that I
possess the zeal and critical reasoning ability required for a
postgraduate course in Leicester University, and I am awfully
ready for the challenge. I am grateful in advance and expect the
authorities to accept my application and let me pursue my
degree from this university.
