Statement of Purpose

Motivation and Purpose

I am applying for a Master’s program in Environmental Engineering with the graduate school of
your university. I’m encouraged to further my education with the university because you meet my
personal, academic and professional objectives. I gained interest in pursuing environmental
engineering after discovering my passion in protecting the natural things that surrounds us.
During junior high school days, I joined the wild life club and that was when I began to
appreciate nature; how beautiful it is and the need to conserve them. Earlier, I was ambitious of
becoming a petroleum engineer but my interest shifted all of a sudden to environmental
engineering.

It is after a good deal of self-evaluation that I have decided to apply for graduate studies
in environmental engineering. This decision followed carefully after I considered my academic
background, the areas of my interest, and my ultimate professional goal of becoming a certified
environmental engineer.

I have read about your program and feel the program should be suitable to me. The purpose of
me applying for a place at your University is to broaden my horizon by acquiring in-depth
knowledge that can help me solve the global challenges the environment present to human.

Academic Background

First degree, I studied environmental engineering at the University of Energy and Natural
Resources under the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Major courses I
studied during my 4 years include water and waste water engineering, pollution control and
engineering, solid waste engineering, geo-environmental engineering, soil pollution and
remediation technologies, environmental sampling and analysis, instrumentation and system
control, water resource management etc.

Work experience

After my first degree in 2018, I started my mandatory statutory 1 year national service with a
Gold mining company by the name Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd as an Environment field Assistant.
During that time, I had to put the classroom knowledge gained into practicality. My role was to
assist in daily environmental monitoring program. I sampled and analyzed for the quality of air,
effluent and portable drinking water, boreholes (underground water) etc.

I have also worked as an Environment Health and safety officer for a subcontractor on Newmont
Goldcorp site in the Ahafo region of Ghana, precisely underground mining operations from 2019
to 2021.
After working a year on Newmont site, I worked with Zen petroleum as an Environment Health
and safety officer and later joined SAL consult on part time contract. SAL consult is a renowned
consultancy firm that provides environmental solutions to companies. I worked with SAL as an
environmentalist and also doubled as a safety officer on some of our projects due to my
combination of environmental engineering and occupational safety

Currently I work in the mid-stream oil and gas sector with a company called Matrix Energy
group. Matrix is an oil and gas marketing company that deals in bulk storage and supply of LPG
and petroleum products in Ghana and West Africa at large. My role with my current organization
is an Environment Health and safety supervisor.

Knowledge gained in my first degree has given me a successful career. In many instances, I have
applied the knowledge to solve environmental problems and I believe pursuing a second degree
in the same area will be of great advantage to me.

Conclusion

In short, I believe that a good graduate program is an essential step for realizing my professional
ambition of becoming a certified Engineer. I also believe that I possess the motivation,
intellectual ability and preparation to do justice to a demanding graduate program.
