Assignment

Given the traffic data for the one-way road shown below

Assume the following for all intersections:

All-red: 2sec.; Yellow: 3sec. Starting Loss: 2sec.; Desired progression speed: 30kph.
Coordinate the 4 intersections. Draw time-distance diagram using appropriate scale. Estimate bandwidth graphically.

Solution
Intersection Approach MovementVolume SFR Lost Time Y-Value Ycr Cop
A West TH+LT 1200 2000 8 0.6 0.85 113.33333
South TH+RT 450 1800 0.25
B West TH+RT 890 2000 8 0.445 0.82 94.444444
North TH+LT 600 1600 0.375
C West TH+LT 920 2000 8 0.46 0.7342857 63.978495
North LT 480 1750 0.2742857
D West TH+LT+RT 1100 2000 8 0.55 1.15625 -108.8
North + South TH 970 1600 0.60625

*Combining TH for North and South lof movement D to make the system 2-way
-followed the lower SFR (1600)

*Ycr can be calculated by summing up the two phases per intersection

Cop can be calculated using the formula:

Cop = 113.33, say 115s

The key intersection is A, requiring the longest cycle (115 sec). For this intersection,
green times are allocated as follows:
g = Co-L
g = 115-12
g = 103 seconds

The effective green of West-approach:

gw=(0.6/0.85)x103
72.705882353
gw= 73s
The actual green for west-approach is:
Gw = 73-1
Gw= 72s

For the other intersections, the maximum actual green for other intersections depends on
the minimum effective green for the side roads. This minimum effective green is computed as

The table shows how the required minimum green is given to the side roads so as to
maximum the green along the West approach

Intersection Y-sidemax Min. g Min. G Max. G*

B 0.445 57 56 49
C 0.46 59 58 47
D 0.60625 78 77 28

*Max. G = C - Min. G - Intergreen

Finally, the actual green and red (in seconds) that will be used for coordinating the N-S
direction are as follows:

Intersection G+Yellow Red

A 75 40
B 52 63
C 50 65
D 31 84

The graph was prepared using the process by the ITE

-The Time-Distance diagram is drawn to scale
-The locations of the intersections to be coordinated are drawn to scale on the horizontal axis.
-A construction line is drawn parallel to this axis.
-Knowing beforehand the common cycle time and its components (effective green and
red periods), a green or red is centred on the construction line. (The figure shows a
red [bold line] being centred on this line.)
-A line (line 1) with a slope corresponding to an assumed desired speed of progression
is drawn. This line represents the first vehicle in platoon that will cross the 1st intersection.
-A line (line 1) with a slope corresponding to an assumed desired speed of progression
is drawn. This line represents the first vehicle in platoon that will cross the 1st intersection.
-Going to the next intersection, a red or a green is centered on the construction line,
with the start of green very close to the initial slopping line. In the figure a green is
centered on the line. The slopping line is then adjusted; this gives the new line (line
2).

-The steps are repeated for the next intersections

-Finally, a line is drawn parallel to line 3. This line represents the last vehicle in the
platoon that will be able to cross all intersections without stopping. Lines are also
drawn to represent the platoon going in the other direction. It can be seen that the
method procedures a balanced flow in both directions. The final desired speed can
also be estimated from the diagram (inverse of the slope of the line).
