1ST CLASS ROUTINE | HIGH PACED DRILL WARM UP 6-8 MINS

LET’S WORK ON AN EXERCISE THE MODAL VERB SHOULD

Modal verb: Should

Part 1:
Teacher: We’re going to practice using the modal verb ‘should’ as well as
‘there + to be’ and ‘instead of’. I’m going to say a word and then spell it, and
you have to tell me what letter should be, or shouldn’t be there. For example:
Teacher: (says the word ‘Cat’ out loud.) K-A-T.
Student: There should be a C instead of a K.
Teacher: (says the word ‘phone’) P-H-O-O-N-E
Student: There shouldn’t be two ‘Os’.

(the following vocabulary is taken from Unit 1 of Ireland)

1. “office” O-F-I-C-E (there should be two Fs)

2. “desk” D-E-S-C (…a k instead of a C)
3. “computer” C-O-M-P-U-T-A-R (…an E instead of an A)
4. “laptop” L-A-B-T-O-P (There should be a P instead of a B)
5. “printer” P-R-Y-N-T-E-R (there should be an i instead of a Y)
6. “water” V-A-T-E-R (should be a W instead of a V)
7. “file” F-I-L-L-E (there should be one Ls)

Part 2:
Teacher: I need to buy a few new things for my house and office, but I have
no idea how much they should cost. Could you give me an idea using ‘about’
or ‘around’? For example, If I say ‘a new keyboard’ you will respond “A new
keyboard should cost you about €25”. Then you’ll have to form the ‘open
question’ which is – “How much should a new keyboard cost you?”

Teacher: Some new business cards (tarjetas de visita)

Student 1: “Some new business cards should cost you about €15.”
Teacher: What’s the open question?
Student 2: “How much should some new business cards cost you?”
