QUIZ ASSIGNMENT: Pre-Writing Techniques
Soil science is the study of soil as a natural resource on the surface of the Earth
including soil formation, classification and mapping; physical, chemical, biological, and
fertility properties of soils; and these properties in relation to the use and management
of soils. This subject is important for me and this is the major I will take in my course,
because in all the subjects of the Agriculture course, soil science has inspired me to
finish my studies. When I first took the Agriculture course, I lost the desire to study
because it wasn't really the course I was supposed to take, but when I took the soil
science subject I gradually liked the Agriculture course because there was this kind of
study on this course. It teaches proper soil management and how to put enough
fertilizer on it, including teaching what is the best type of soil for each crop we want to
plant.

One of the important studies in this subject is classifying of soil type, whether it is
sand, clay, silt and loam types of soil based on the dominating size of the particles
within a soil. This study is important because it can be applied to Agricultural work,
especially in crop production. Sandy Soil is light, warm, dry and tends to be acidic and
low in nutrients. Sandy soils are often known as light soils due to their high proportion of
sand and little clay (clay weighs more than sand). Clay Soil is a heavy soil type that
benefits from high nutrients. Clay soils remain wet and cold in winter and dry out in
summer. Silt Soil is a light and moisture retentive soil type with a high fertility rating. As
silt soils compromise of medium sized particles they are well drained and hold moisture
well. Loam soil is a mixture of sand, silt and clay that are combined to avoid the
negative effects of each type. These soils are fertile, easy to work with and provide
good drainage. Depending on their predominant composition they can be either sandy
or clay loam.

Also important in this subject, is the study of soil properties, including the
physical, chemical, biological and fertility properties of soil. Physical properties of soil
include color, texture, structure, porosity, density, consistency, temperature, and air.
The soil is a chemical entity. All the materials there are chemical substances. Soils are
composed of solid, liquid, and gas; soluble and insoluble; and organic as well as
inorganic substances. A large number of organisms live in the soil. They perform a
variety of functions for their growth and reproduction. For these functions of soil
organisms, soils behave like a living entity. Soil components photosynthesize, respire,
and reproduce. In addition, they produce organic matter, consume organic matter, and
decompose them. Soil fertility refers to the ability of soil to sustain agricultural plant
growth, to provide plant habitat and result in sustained and consistent yields of high
quality.
The components of this subject such as the study of soil type and properties are
important in our Agriculture because it will greatly help future Agriculturists so that they
can further increase their knowledge in soil management and planting. It is important to
study the type of soil because we can use it to know the best crop for our soil and it is
also important to study the properties of the soil because it will help us to manage the
soil of our plant.
