Assignment: 01.02 Ocean Exploration

The purpose of this lab is to learn about buoyancy, which is the ability of an object to float in a
liquid. It is also about exploring the effects of pressure on a Cartesian diver.

hypothesis: I believe that if the pressure increases, then the diver will continue to float. If it was
already floating, I don't think squeezing the bottle would make it go under.

DATA:

Pressure: Neutral (starting position)

Observation of Diver: it's on top, basically floating.

Depth (cm): 3cm

Pressure: Small increase (lightly squeezing bottle)

Observation of Diver: It sunk to the middle of the bottle.

Depth (cm): 11cm

Pressure: Large increase (strongly squeezing bottle)

Observation of Diver: it went all the way to the bottom of the bottle.

Depth (cm): 21 cm

Conclusion:

Was your hypothesis supported by your observations?

my hypothesis was wrong. I didn't think squeezing the bottle would do anything. It definitely
made the diver chance positions drastically.

Identify any experimental errors.

There were no experimental errors.

You observed the effect of pressure on the buoyancy of the Cartesian diver. What is a different
variable that you could change the next time you repeat this experiment and that might also
affect the buoyancy of the diver?

To make the experiment different, I could change the diver, like use a different item for example.
Or, I could apply different amounts of pressure to the bottle.

How does this experiment relate to what you've learned about submersible technology such as
submarines and ROVs?

This experiment relates to what I’ve learned about submersible technology such as submarines
and ROVs because those in this experiment I had to control the pressure to manage the
buoyancy of the diver. Submarines and HOVs also need to have a certain amount of pressure
applied in order to achieve the buoyancy needed to work properly underwater.
