Bones give us support and allow us to move. They protect the brain, heart, and other organs from injury. In
addition, bones store minerals such as calcium and phosphorous, which help keep our bones strong, and release them
to other organs when they are needed for other uses.
Types of bones:
1. Long bones: In the first place we have the long bones that have a cylindrical shape, and which we can say are
always longer than they are wide. These bones are divided into three parts, these ends called the epiphysis and a
body called the diaphysis. as an example of long bones we could put humerus and femur.
2. Short bones: In this type of bones, it does not forgive any type of shape or dimension, that is, there is no
proportion regarding the length to the width. Its main function is to cushion. as an example of a short bone we
could name the carpus and the tarsus. The short bones are mainly located in the ankle and wrist joints thus
allowing all kinds of movement and stability in rotation.
3. Flat bones: In this case, the main characteristic in terms of dimensions is that they are wider and longer than they
are thick. Their main function is to protect soft tissues. As an example of a flat bone we can put the bones of the
skull, the scapula or the shoulder blade.
4. Irregular bones: These, as the name itself indicates, do not present a predominant shape or division in terms of
their grouping, CSL are usually located in the midline and their functions vary, although the most important is
the Protection of the central nervous system. as an example of these irregular verbs we would have the vertebrae.
5. Sesamoid bones: They are small structures that have a somewhat oval shape and are located in the vicinity of the
tendons. Its main function is to try to reduce friction. These bones can be found next to the first toe, the
kneecap, and so on.
Bones
