Types of Adverbs

What is an adverb?
Adverb is a word used to describe verbs or modify adjectives and other adverbs.
For further study, adverbs also can modify phrases, clauses, and sentences.
Examples: The teacher speaks loudly in the class.
They drives very fast.
There are five main types of adverbs:
Adverbs of manner
Adverbs of place
Adverbs of purpose
Adverbs of frequency
Adverbs of time
Adverbs of manner
An adverb of manner describes how something happens. They can either place
after the main verb of after the object.
Examples: well, really, quickly, softly, loudly, beautifully, brightly .....
They speak loudly.
She speaks softly.
They did it well.
He sits quietly near the garden.
He quietly asks me to leave the class. Vs He asks me to leave the class quietly.
Adverbs of place
An adverb of place tells us where something happens. It doesn’t modify
adjective of adverb.
Examples: here, around, everywhere, nowhere, there, outside, away,......
Mesa looks around but he doesn’t see anything.
They search everywhere they can think of.
He goes outside.
I am going back to school.
I have nowhere to go.
Note: Some adverbs can be used as prepositions when they are followed by nouns or
pronouns.

ADVERBS PREPOSITIONS

He walks around but he sees nothing. He walks around the house but he sees
nothing.
Nita wants to go outside to see the beautiful
view. Nita wants to go outside the city to see the
beautiful view.
He goes away without saying anything.
He goes away from me without saying
anything.
Adverbs of purpose
An adverb of purpose also has known as adverb of reasons that refer to the
words express the aim or an action.
Examples: in order to, since, thus, so that, hence, therefore, consequently...
He studies in order to pass exam.
Since it is snowing, I am feeling very cold.
The teacher thus corrects her students gently.
I consequently get paid of my project.
Adverbs of frequency
An adverb of frequency describes how often an action happens. There are six
main verbs of frequency that are used in English: always, usually, often,
sometimes, rarely, never,..., and others such as seldom, normally, generally,...
Examples:
Jonh always goes to school every morning.
I usually get up at 6 am in the morning.
He often has dinner outside.
I sometimes go to the cinema with friends.
I rarely paly game.
Sopheak never drinks beer.
Adverbs of time
An adverb of time tells us when an action happens, but also for long or how
often sometimes.
Examples: yesterday, tomorrow, now, later, ....
I saw her yesterday.
It happened last week.
I have to leave now.
He watches movies all day.
Her mother lived in America for a year.
I have lived in in Phnom Penh since 2018.
