EXERCISE NO. 7

ASSAY OF SODIUM CHLORIDE CONTENT OF TABLE SALT

Objective : To assay the Sodium Chloride content of table salt by volumetric precipitation.

Materials : Table salt Nitric acid

Silver nitrate, 0.1N nitrobenzene

Ferric ammonium sulfate TS

1.1 N Ammonium thiocyanate solution

Procedure :

1. Weigh accurately about 250 mg of Sodium chloride, dissolve it in 50 mL of water in a glass-

stoppered flask.

2. Add 50 mL of 0.1N Silver nitrate, 3 mL of nitric acid, 5 mL of nitrobenzene and 2 mL of

ferric ammonium sulfate TS.

3. Shake well and titrate the excess silver nitrate with 0.1N Ammonium thiocyanate.

Each milliliter of 0.1N Silver nitrate is equivalent to 5.844 mg of NaCl.

Reaction Involved :
Questions :

1. What is the purpose of adding nitrobenzene ?

2. Why is Nitric acid added to the mixture ?

3. A 0.2182 g of sample of sodium chloride was assayed by Volhard method using 50 mL of

0.0985 N Silver nitrate and 11.75 mL of 0.1340 N Ammonium thiocyanate. Calculate the

percent NaCl in the sample.
