GENERAL MATHEMATICS REVIEWER

I. DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT EACH GIVEN IS A FUNCTION.
1) {(1, 2), (2, − 2), (3, 3), (4, 2), (5, 10), (6, − 10), (7, 3), (8, 5)}

The given set of ordered pairs models a function. There is no first element being repeated.

2) {(1, 2), (2, − 2), (3, 3), (4, 2), (2, 10), (3, − 10), (2, 3), (1, 5)}

The given set of ordered pairs does not model a function. Some first elements were repeated.

3)

𝒙 −2 −1 0 1 2
The given table of values models a function. There

4 is no element in 𝑥 being repeated.

𝒚 4 1 0 1

4)

𝒙 4 1 0 1 4
The given table of values does not model a
function. Some elements in 𝑥 were repeated.
𝒚 −2 −1 0 1 2

II. VERTICAL LINE TEST

Definition: A graph represents a function if and only if no vertical line intersects the graph in
more than one point.

III. EVALUATION OF FUNCTION

 Finding a value of a given algebraic expression is to substitute the value(s) of the variable(s)
given to the expression.
 To evaluate a given function 𝑓(𝑥) is the same as finding the function value given the value
of the variable 𝑥 by substituting this value for the function. These values of 𝑥 must belong to
the domain of the function.

IV. OPERATION ON FUNCTIONS

Let 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) be two functions defined in their respective domains. These functions can be
combined to form new function ℎ(𝑥) defined as follows:

V. COMPOSITION OF FUNCTIONS

Given two functions 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥), the composite function of 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) is defined and
denoted by: (𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑔(𝑥)); and (𝑔 ∘ 𝑓)(𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑓(𝑥))

VI. RATIONAL EQUATIONS, INEQUALITIES, AND FUNCTIONS

A rational equation is an equation containing at least one fraction whose numerator and
𝑝(𝑥)
denominator are polynomials, . These fractions may be on one or both sides of the equation.
𝑞(𝑥)

A rational inequality is an inequality that contains a rational expression, where a rational

expression is a ratio of two polynomials. That is, a rational expression is of the form 𝑝(𝑥)/𝑞(𝑥)
where 𝑝(𝑥) and 𝑞(𝑥) are polynomials and 𝑞(𝑥) is not zero.

A rational function is a function that is the ratio of polynomials.

Any function of one variable, x, is called a rational function if, it can be represented
p(x)
as f(x) = , where p(x) and q(x) are polynomials such that q(x) ≠ 0.
q(x)
