The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness

of Project JoWorKsKI in the new normal as an innovative technique in

campus journalism intervention and review program for S.Y. 2020-2021

towards the increase of young journalists’ performance in this time of the

new normal in education.

The descriptive research design was used in this study. The

researcher used purposive sampling where the respondents are the LCES

young journalists for school year 2020 – 2021 taking into account the

situation during this time of the pandemic. This action research was

focused and limited to (17) seventeen LCES young journalists. The

researcher collected the data by means of a survey questionnaire. This

study employed the descriptive survey approach to assess the relevance,

preparedness, and availability of Project JoWorKsKI resources for

improving or increasing the level of performance of young journalists.

The use of Project JoWorksKI Monitoring and Evaluation Tool by

School Paper Advisers to monitor and record the progress of young

journalists’ performance and the Reflection or Exit Card accomplished by

young journalists after virtual training to assess their learning made this

study original.

The test of significant effect of Project JoWorksKI in the New

Normal as an Innovative Technique in Uplifting Young Journalists’

Performance was used in this study.

This study concluded that Project JoWorksKI in the New Normal as

an Innovative Technique has significant effect in uplifting young journalists’

performance since the computed t-value is -2.23 with the degree of

freedom of 7 and critical value of 2.36.

The result of this study denotes that the level campus journalism

intervention and review program in Liliw Central Elementary School in

terms of relevance, readiness and availability of resources is evaluated as

“Excellent”.

Project JoWorksKI in the New Normal was effective and can be

utilized for Distance Learning Modality.

training, innovative technique, young journalists.

Introduction

Campus journalism plays a huge role in education in the Philippines.

The administration of the school publication has resulted in campus

journalism practices being used to achieve the goals of journalism.

Liliw Central Elementary School depends on DepEd’s mandate to

provide a school system and assist learners to discover their full potential

in a child-centered and value driven teaching-learning environment and

thereby, enable them to create their own destiny in the global community.

In compliance with the “Campus Journalism Act of 1991” which

declared the policy of the state to uphold freedom of the press even at the

campus level and promote the growth of campus journalism as means of

strengthening ethical values, encouraging critical and creative thinking,

and developing moral character, The Banahaw Breeze and Ang Balitang

Banahaw, the official English and Filipino school publication of Liliw

Central Elementary School, cohere to Republic Act No. 7079, An Act

Providing for the Development and Promotion of Campus Journalism and

for their Purposes, which shall be utilized to train interested pupils in the

application of communication arts in journalism; the basic mechanism and

technical skills in journalism; the responsibilities and privileges in

journalism in relation with the contents of articles to be published and the

use of the student publication in support of the educational development of

the learner, the school, the community and the country.

Cubillas (2021) confirmed that the level of awareness and compliance

in campus journalism were directly related, that is if the former is low, the

latter will also be low and vice versa. An important feature of this academic

year is the use of alternative learning modalities or adaptive learning such

as the use of online platforms for their classes. Campus Journalism this

school year undergoes widespread changes. According to Laroya &

Limjuco (2016) the more proficient the student writers are, the more

relevant articles can be found in the issues of the student papers and the

higher the quality of the write-ups are. Campus journalism intervention and

review programs are needed to sustain in order to develop the journalistic

skills of LCES young journalists; assess the training needs supported by

an output of each participant; and further equip young journalists with the

much-needed skills in the field of journalism.

In connection with, the researcher decided to conduct an action

research to improve the existing campus journalism training program and

made innovations in this new normal to address the needed changes in

the training program.

The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of

Project JoWorKsKI in the new normal as innovative technique in campus

journalism intervention and review program for S.Y. 2020-2021 towards

the increase of young journalists’ performance even in this time of the new

normal in education.

ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The study focused on Project JoWorKsI in the New Normal as an

innovative technique in uplifting young journalists’ performance in Liliw

Central Elementary School.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions.

1. What is the mean level of campus journalism intervention

and review program in Liliw Central Elementary School?

1.1 relevance

1.2 readiness

1.3 availability of resources

2. What is the level of Journalists’ Outputs?

2.1 phase 1

2.2 phase 2

3. What is the significant effect of Project JoWorksKI in the New

Normal as an innovative technique in uplifting young journalists’

performance?
Methodology

a. Respondents / Subjects of the Study

The researcher employed seventeen (17) young journalists of The

Banahaw Breeze and Ang Balitang Banahaw of Liliw Central Elementary

School for the school year 2020 – 2021 as subjects of this study.

b. Sampling

A purposive sampling was used to investigate and find the

important information and data necessary for research that take into

account the situation in education in the new normal.

c. Data Collection

The researcher collected the data by means of a survey

questionnaire that comprises the relevance, readiness and availability of

resources. Monitoring and Evaluation Tool was also used to record the

progress of young journalists’ performance. Part of the monitoring process

of Project JoWorKsKI was the Reflection or Exit Card accomplished by

young journalists after the training. After the respondents accomplished

their outputs and reflection, the accomplished monitoring tool was checked

and interpreted by school paper advisers.

d. Data Analysis Plan

The researcher yielded an extreme effort in planning the structure

to be used in this study. The descriptive survey method was used in this

study to evaluate the relevance, readiness and availability of resources

provided by Project JoWorKsKI to uplift or increase the level of

performance of young journalists.

Mean Percentage Score (MPS) was used as statistical tool to

analyze and interpret the collected data from the survey or observation

checklist and T-test as a statistical tool was used to evaluate if Project

JoWorKsKI in the New Normal has a significant effect on the increase of

young journalists’ performance. A survey or observation checklist was

distributed to the respondents for the evaluation or the impact of the said

project in the uplifting or increase of their performance.

e. Ethical Issues

The result of this research was treated as confidential. The names

of the respondents were not mentioned.

The training must increase the capacity of young journalists in processing

information to be helpful. The speakers were advised to provide updated

styles in journalism.

Training materials should meet young journalists’ expectations and

should be presented in an interesting way. Quality of materials available

must be consistent throughout the training.

DepEd Top Management should maintain their support to help

frame school paper advisers as they tackle the challenges of distance

learning. Keep inspiring others and finding new teaching and innovation
