CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In today’s digital age, television has become a ubiquitous presence in our lives,

including with the educational setting with the increasing availability of television in

classroom. There is a growing interest in exploring the effects of television usage on

students academic performance, particularly among Junior Highschool Students.

Forevermore, Television is define as a diverse set of technology tools, a

resources to gain information and share for faster communication. According to khan. et al

(2015) Television have expanded rise of attentive in the students. Moreover in Europe

country, television and it's use has attained top level important in education. In the

Philippines the Filipino students are able to acquire television, from that it will help them to

achieve greater benefits of learning (Bonifacio 2013). Television as a learning tool, that one

of the best way of how students gain an effective learning or lessons from their teachers.

Although when using television in class, is a great possibility that students will better

understand their teachers' lessons or discussion that may guide a better communication.

Moreover, the effect of television in students has tremendous potential to serve

and help learners connected with the process of education in many ways. The researcher's

will be conduct this study just to discover a new information of how television effect to

students in term of their academic performance.

There are many literature found that discuss about the television usage or it's

benefits. On the other hand, this study distinct students experience with the use of

television in their class.


Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study sought to answers the effect of television as a learning

tool on academic performance of Junior High School students.

Specifically, this research aimed to find out answers to the followingː

1.What is the profile of the respondents in the study in terms of;

1.1 Grade level;

1.2 Age;

1.3 Sex;

2. How does Television as a learning tool can benefit students in their

academic performance in terms of;

2.1 Lessons;

2.2 Activities;

2.3 Reporting;

2.4 Grades;

3. What are the effect of Television usage for students to their learning

in terms of;

3.1 Comprehension;

3.2 Communication;

3.3 Learning experience;


Significance of the study

Hopefully, the result of this study will serve as important information to the

followingː

Enhancing student engagement. Television has the potential to capture

students attention and engage them in the learning process. By exploring the effect of

television as a learning tool, this study may shed light on innovative ways to improve

student engagement, motivation, and participation in academic activities.

Future Researcher. This study aims to provide a valuable foundation for

future researchers seeking to expand their knowledge on the effect of television as a

learning tool o students academic performance. The findings and insights obtained from

this study can serve as a valuable reference and guide for future researcher.
Scope and Delimitation

This research studied the effect of television as a learning tool on academic

performance in Junior High School Students. Additionally, it is delimited to the junior high

school students of Happy Valley Integrated School.

Definition of terms

The following are the guides for definitions, that aims to have a better

understanding in this researchː

Television. Conceptually, as Catherine Johnson note, television is a hybrid

medium that has been subject to similarly endless change and whose definition has never

been stable (2019:30), Operationally, it’s defined the device use for receiving and

displaying of visual audio content and informational purposes. Through that, students can

experience a better learning.

Learning tool. Conceptually, it is a set of inclusive features available in a

wide range of platforms that assist all learners in reading, writing, and communication

(Support.microsoft.com). Operationally, in this study it must be include a learning tool that

can help students to improve their academic performance.

Academic performance. Conceptually, academic performance defined as

highest for academic achievement followed by knowledge gained as well as skills and

abilities acquired (York et.al,2015). Operationally, in this study it refers to the academic

performance of students particularly in developing their knowledge.


Effect. Conceptually, it something that inevitably follows an antecedent

such as a cause or agent (Meriam.webster.com). Operationally, in this research study

focuses the effect of television usage on the academic performance of students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

To provide a background and framework for the survey, selected literature

related to the study were selected in this section. The review includes theories, principles,

concepts, studies and views related to the effect of television as a learning tool on

academic performance of junior high school in Happy Valley Integrated School.
