The Confidence and Insecurity of Being 13

Dance Nation, written by Clare Barron takes the point of view of seven 11 to 13-year-old

girls in a dance class, getting ready to put on a dance performance based on Gandhi and his

spirit. This play focuses on the inner thought and actions of these girls and how they react and

navigate becoming an adult from being a child. During this time they grow fangs, chew on

lightbulbs, chant “pussy” around each other, and mistake their Dance Teacher as someone to

love. Dance Nation explores and exposes the confidence and insecurity of being a teenager and

shows the reality of what happens when childhood is forgotten and knowledge is gained,

displaying the uncomfortable truth that society doesn’t want to receive.

Puberty is a stage that all people will go through in their lives. Teenage girls have it the

worst. Emotions run high, bodies change, hair grows in places that didn’t exist before.
