(СЛАЙД-1) Ok. Let’s get started. Let me start by introducing myself.

My name is
Ulara.
The title of my work is “The use of the gerund in English based on the novel
‘Vanity Fair’ by William Thackeray”.
(СЛАЙД-2) Let me ask you a question. Do you know anything about the novel
‘Vanity fair’?
(СЛАЙД-3) ‘Vanity Fair’ is a novel written by William Thackeray.
(СЛАЙД-4) The author brings to light many quirks, vices and weaknesses of high
society, equating them with ordinary people, or even putting them lower. The main
idea of the novel is to show how undeservedly some, due to their origin, are forced
to vegetate all their lives, and some who are not worthy, quite the contrary.
(СЛАЙД-5) The objective is to explore ways of using gerund forms in various
functions in a sentence. You can see the object and the subject of the work in the
slide.
(СЛАЙД-6) Now, you can see the tasks of the work on the screen.
(СЛАЙД-7) First of all, I’d like to give a definition of the term ‘gerund’.
Gerund is an impersonal form of a verb that expresses
the name of an action and has both the properties of a verb and a noun.
There is no corresponding form in Russian.
Its function in the sentence is largely similar to the infinitive, but it has more
properties of a noun.
(СЛАЙД-8) Then, let’s talk a little bit about the functions of Gerund.
1. In the role of the subject, the gerund is used without a preposition.
Smoking is bad for health.
2. Gerund in the role of the nominal part of the compound predicate. In this case,
the gerund plays the role of the semantic part of the predicate, following the verb -

His hobby is collecting stamps.
3. Gerund as part of a compound verbal predicate.
Without a preceding preposition, the gerund is most often used as part of a
compound verbal predicate.
The manager has finished dictating a letter to the secretary.
4. Gerund as a direct object.
The gerund is used in the direct object function most often after the verbs to
mention, to remember, to mind, etc.
I don't mind walking.
5. Gerund in the function of an indirect (prepositional) object.
In the function of a prepositional indirect object, the gerund is used after many
verbs.
I'm fond of reading
6. Gerund as a definition.
In the definition function, the gerund explains any member of the sentence
expressed by the noun, answering the questions: which?, what?, what?, whose?,
which?
I don't see any use in going there.
7. Gerund as a circumstance.
The gerund in this case refers to the verb and answers the questions how?,
where?, when?, why?, why? In this role, the gerund is always preceded by a
preposition.
He likes singing English songs.
(СЛАЙД-9)
In the practical part, the functions of the gerund forms in the work "Vanity Fair"
by W. Thackeray will be considered.
In the final, I would like to say that the gerund stands out from other impersonal
forms of the English verb in that there is no analogue of the gerund in Russian. It
has the properties of a verb and a noun, and in a sentence, it can take the place of
any member of the sentence, except for a simple predicate.
