 Genesis and Existentialism

1. The book of Genesis was written by whom?

The writing of the book of Genesis is credited to Moses, but there are scholars that doubt this

fact, since the creation of the book is thought to have been between the sixth and fifth century

before Christ.

2. Who divide the Bible into chapters and verses? Why did they name the first

chapter Genesis?

The Greeks divided the Bible into chapters and verses and named the first book Genesis due

to its opening line that says, “In the Beginning….”. They took this line and chose Genesis

that means “beginning” in Greek.

3.  Who was the first King to put the Bible to English?

King James was the one that authorized the bible to have an English version in 1611.

4. Name at least 4 differences seen and discussed in genesis I with Genesis II?
The differences that can be seen between Geneses 1 and 2 are several. The first difference is

the order in which events happen, specifically relating to Genesis 2 putting the creation of

man before the creation of animals. There is a difference on the focus that they have. Genesis

1 focuses on all the creative creations that God made in an order in which they happened. In

contrast, Genesis II is focused mainly on mankind and the interaction between us and God’s

other creations. Another difference can be found in the focus and level of perspective.

Genesis 1 focuses on wat physically happened in the time of creation and Genesis 2 focuses

more on the spiritual side of the events. The most known difference is that the stories come

from two different authors who lived in different years and cultures. The style and use of

language are different in both. For example, they use a different name for God in both

stories.

5. What important human questions are answered in these parts of the Old

Testament?

What is the true origin of the human?

Why is the serpent represented as evil in various passages?

6. Where is the split in Genesis, whereby Genesis I ends, and Genesis II begins?

Genesis 1 ended when God created the sixth day and on the other hand Genesis 2 begins

when the

Heavens and the earth had been created and God rested on the seventh day and blessed his

creative work.

7. How does the story “The well-Baked Man” compare, and the contrast, with the

Genesis Reading?
In the story of The Well-baked man, the origin of man is discussed interestingly and

peculiarly since it was a magician who created man and the other human races using clay that

he baked. On the other hand, in the books of Genesis, God created the Heavens, and the earth

thus also gave rise to animals and man and woman who were called Adam Eve.

Whereas in Genesis, when God created Adam and Eve there was the tree of the knowledge of

good and evil in which they could not eat since God told them that they could die. But in that

tree was the serpent who deceived Eve and gave the fruit to Adam. When God found out he

cursed them.

8. What is one of the main differences in “The well-Baked Man” creation story?

The Magician made two figures from clay and turned his back. Coyote changed the figures

to appeal to him.

God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life

9. Regarding Existentialism, what does “existence precedes essence” mean?

That a personality is not built over a previously designed model or a precise purpose,

because it is the human being who chooses to engage in such enterprise.

10. Does existentialist believe in any god? Why or why not?

The philosophical belief we are each responsible for creating purpose or meaning in our own

lives. Our individual purpose and meaning are not given to us by Gods, governments,

teachers or other authorities.

       11. What is meant when people say “human nature” is problematic?

Human nature is a concept that denotes the fundamental dispositions and characteristics—including

ways of thinking, feeling, and acting—that humans are said to have naturally. The term is often used

to denote the essence of humankind, or what it 'means' to be human. People are complicated and

sometimes people don’t know what they want. I believe in our nature humans are problematic, we are
always trying to make a problem out of something. Also, we are offended and fight with other people

in any chance. Humans are complicated and that is part of our nature.

12.Can an existentialist be a moral person? Explain

A moral person behaves in a way that is believed by most people to be good and right. I do believe an

existentialist can be a moral person because they can behave in what they believe is good and right. A

person is alone in determining what he or she would do without any external influences.

13. One of the key points in being of existential mind is having choice. Explain what this

means to you.

For me having choice means we have different possibilities or different paths that we can

choose in our life. There we must make a choice, that is when people decide which of two or

more possibilities or alternatives is best. Humans make choices every moment of their lives,

feelings, actions etc.,

14.When dread and anxiety are mentioned, what is their relation to existentialism?

Anxiety and dread are related to existentialism because those are symptoms you feel. It is

view in existentialism as an inevitable part of life that everyone will experience, and

something that is positive and that can teach us important lessons about life.
