Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Chalk, a soft and white marking tool that helps teachers relay lessons to students. It is a

very useful tool in education and has been for many years. Upon the emergence of highly

advance and new technology which also affected education, chalks are disregarded in some

schools. However, in most public schools chalks are in great demand. This powdery marking tool

was first attested on chalkboard in the United States since 1800s, in a lecture course in

mathematics given by George Baron.

Chalk forms from a fine-grained marine sediment known to be as ooze. Ooze were

accumulated remains of sunk and dead organisms living on the bottom or the waters above such

as foraminifera, marine algae, or other organisms. These accumulated ooze that contains

calcium carbonate forms chalk. Extensive deposit of

Theoretical Background
THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to make chalk out of duck eggshell. Specifically, this study

will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What are the characteristics of duck eggshell in terms of:

a. Appearance,

b. Odor, and

c. Color?

2. Do duck eggshells can be use as main ingredient in making chalk?

3. How effective is duck eggshell chalk compared to commercial chalk in

terms of:
a. Clarity in writing,

b. Hardness, and

c. Durability?

Statement of the Hypothesis

The researchers of this study think that duck eggshells are effective

ingredients in producing chalk.

The researchers also think that duck eggshells may not be as effective as

the commercially produced ones.

Significance of the Study

The importance of this study is for us to understand the gathered

information regarding the dealings on how effective is the use of duck eggshell

chalk to students and teacher in using the product. Furthermore, the results of

this study will give a great benefit to the following:

Students. This is beneficial to students in a way that they will be able to

indulge themselves in recycling and creativity to make chalk out of waste

eggshells. Also, without the presence of chemical and other toxic elements on
the product, this will be beneficial to their health and further enjoy their school

life.

Teachers. This is beneficial to teachers as they are the ones that uses

chalk more often. At the same time they can use this study as the basis of

teaching, if they want to teach how to make chalk with the use of eggshells.

Parents. Like the teachers, it could be beneficial to parents and could be

used to bond with their children during their quality time. As well as, if launched, it

will assure the parents that their children in school are safe from inhaling the dust

produces by the chalk.

Balut Vendors. This is beneficial to balut vendors, to minimize their

Environment. This study will help lessen the wastage of eggshells

Future Researchers. The data and the result provided may be used as a

reference in conducting new research and in validating other related findings.

The future researchers will have a guidance and overview in connection with the

study.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design

The study will use both qualitative and quantitative approach, for

qualitative approach descriptive research design will be use since researchers of

this study will observe, understand, and describe the ideas of using duck

eggshells in making chalk. As for quantitative approach, experimental research

design will be use which is found to complement the nature of the research

study. It will also help the researchers to determine the possibility of making a

potential chalk out of duck eggshell.

Research Environment

This study will be conducted in Mater Dei College – Elementary

Department. MDC is Roman Catholic Institution located in Cabulijan, Tubigon,

Bohol. It is a private and educational school established in the year 1983. The

researchers choose this environment because they found out that unlike the

other departments in MDC, elementary department’s teachers and students use

chalk more often than marker during classes.

Research Participants

The respondents of this research study will focused on the students and

teachers in Mater Dei College – Elementary Department. The respondents will be

selected using a non-probability sampling technique which is the convenience

sampling. First, the researchers will select participants (samples that being drawn
out from that part of the population) who are 'convenient' for the researcher to

access. There is no pattern whatsoever in acquiring these respondents and that

makes it convenient - as long as you are a student or teacher of the elementary

department you can be a respondent.
