Portions of Respiratory
system
• Conducting
• Respiratory

3

Conducting portion
• consists of passageways
that conduct air for
gaseous exchange to
and from the lungs.
• include the trachea,
bronchi, and larger
bronchioles

4

Olfactory Mucosa
made up of
• olfactory epithelium
• lamina propria,
• connective tissue
• fibroblasts
• blood vessels
• Bowman's glands
• axons from http://neuroguo.com
the olfactory neurons
5

Olfactory epithelium
• Located at the roof of the
nose
• pseudostratified tall
columnar epithelium
• ends at olfactory vesicles
-Radiating from each
olfactory vesicle are long,
nonmotile olfactory cilia
(odor receptors)
• has no goblet cells or
motile cilia.

6

Olfactory epithelium
Consists
• Sustentacular cells
-for metabolic and
physical support
• Basal cell
-for cell division
• Olfactory cells
-the sensory bipolar
neurons

8

Olfactory Mucosa
• With olfactory cells
-axons pass to the
lamina propria as
bundles of unmyelinated
olfactory nerves or fila
olfactoria.

Epiglottis
has both
• Lingual surface
-lined with a stratified
squamous nonkeratinized
epithelium
• laryngeal surface
-pseudostratified ciliated
columnar epithelium
• framework is elastic
cartilage https://www.2minutemedicine.com

Choking
• blockage of the upper
airway by food or other
objects
• prevents a person from
breathing effectively

Conducting portion: Larynx

• with false vocal fold
-vocal cord
-lined by pseudostratified
ciliated columnar
epithelium
-with goblet cells.
-with seromucous glands
-with lymphatic nodules
-with blood vessels
-with adipose cells

Conducting portion: Larynx

• With true vocal fold
-lined by

23

Conducting portion: trachea

• With incomplete C-
shaped hyaline
cartilage rings
-trachealis muscle
bridge the space
• lumen is lined by
pseudostratified
ciliated columnar
epithelium with goblet
cells
• Has seromucous
tracheal glands http://www.bu.edu

diseases
• impeded mucociliary
clearance

28

Conducting portion: bronchi

• Encircled by irregular
hyaline cartilage plates
• Divide and decrease in
size is it go down
- the cartilage plates also
decrease in size and
number.
-when diameter
decreases to about 1 mm,
cartilage plates completely
disappear 11th Ed Di Fiore's atlas of histology with functional correlations

Conducting portion: large

bronchioles
• lined ciliated
pseudostratified
epithelium
• As the tubular size
decreases, the epithelial
height is gradually
reduced
• contains numerous
goblet cells
-number gradually
decreases with the
decreasing tubular size https://www.frontiersin.org
