Assignment #7

1. Determine if the atmosphere is unstable, neutral, or stable based on the following temperature
profiles, show your work and explain your choices.

Case Elevation (Z) (m) Temperature (T) (°C) Case Elevation (Z) Temperature (T) (°C)
(m)
a 1.5 -4.49 d 2 5.00
349 0.10 50 5.00
b 8 18.55 e 2 -21.01
339 17.93 50 -25.17
c 2 5.00 -- -- --
50 4.52

2. Given the following observations, use the key to stability categories (as given in table 7-8) to
determine the stability:
a) Clear winter night at 2:00 A.M.; wind speed of 2.8 m/s
b) Summer afternoon at 1:00 P.M. with broken low clouds; wind speed of 5.2 m/s
c) Clear summer afternoon at 1:00 P.M.; wind speed of 1.6 m/s
d) Overcast summer night at 1:30 A.M.; wind speed of 2.1 m/s
e) Overcast winter morning at 9:30 A.M.; wind speed of 6.6 m/s
f) Thinly overcast winter night 8:00 P.M.; wind speed of 2.4 m/s

3. Calculate the concentration (in g/m3) resulting from an emission of 1976 g/s of SO2 into a 2.5
m/s wind s (the wind speed is measured at 10m elevation), at a location 15 km downwind at a
distance 0.2km perpendicular to the plume centerline. Knowing that the time is 1:00 A.M. on a
clear winter night in a rural area. Assume an effective stack height of 85 m.

4. You measured a gaseous pollutant concentration on a clear summer afternoon at a wind speed
of 3.2 m/s (the wind speed is measured at 10m elevation), and you found that the gaseous
pollutant concentration is 1520 µg/m3 at a location 1 km downwind and 0.5 km perpendicular to
the plume centerline from a plant located in an urban area. Given the following parameters and
conditions, determine the emission rate of the plant.

Stack parameters: Height = 25m, Diameter = 1.5 m, Exit velocity = 12 m/s, Temperature = 322 °C

Atmospheric conditions: Pressure = 100 kPa, Temperature =28 °C
