INSTRUCTIONS: Answer Any Four Questions Time: 72

hours

1. a. State THREE Basic Concepts of Linear Programming.

[3 Marks]

b. Kings Electronics Company produces two products: DVD player, and VCD player. The

production process for each product is similar in that both require a certain number of hours of

electronic work, a certain number of labour-hours and a certain amount of material resources in

the assembly department. Each DVD takes 3 hours of electronic work, 4 hours in the
assembly

shop and 6 tons of materials. Each VCD takes 5 hours of electronic work, 2 hours in
the

assembly shop and 8 tons of materials. During the current production period, 500 hours
of

electronic time are available, 350 hours of assembly department time are available and
800 tons

of materials are available. Each DVD sold yields a profit of £ 8 and each VCD player is sold
at a

profit of £ 10 . Kings problem is to determine the best possible combination of the two
product to

manufacture in order to get the maximum profit.

i. State the Objective function in terms of the unit profits of the two CD players.

ii. State the constraint inequalities

iii. Graph these constraints on a suitable graph.

iv. Find the maximum profit.

v. Find the number of DVD and VCD players to produce in order to maximize profit.

vi. As an attachment Student to Kings Electronics Company, what advice will you give to

Management if an additional assembler and an electrician are to be employed who will receive

salaries of £ 2.00 and £ 1.00 respectively.

2. a. Explain the following terminologies:

i. Balanced Transportation Problem [ 2 Marks ]

ii. Degeneracy in Transportation Problem [ 2 Marks ]

b. A firm of wholesale domestic equipment suppliers, with 3 warehouses, received orders

for a total of 100 deep freezers from 4 retail shops. There are 110 deep freezers
available in

the 3 warehouses and the management wishes to minimize transport cost by dispatching
the

freezers required from the appropriate warehouses.

Details of availabilities, requirements and transport costs are given in the table below

AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS
Warehouse 1 40 Shop A 25
Warehouse 2 20 Shop B 25
Warehouse 3 50 Shop C 42
Shop D 8

i. Construct a balanced transportation tableau for the problem above.

[2 Marks]

ii. Use the least cost method (LCM) to find the initial feasible cost of transporting deep

freezers from each warehouse to each of the 4 shops .

[3 Marks]

iii. Determine the optimum numbers of deep freezers to transport from each warehouse to each

of the 4 shops in order to minimize total transportation cost.

4.a. A company employs service engineers based at various locations throughout the country

to service and repair their equipment installed in the customers’ premises. Four requests for

service have been received and the company finds that four engineers are available. The

maximum contribution of the four available engineers is urgently need to help get the

equipments running. How best can they be assigned to maximize efficiency?

b. Out of a stock of 200 resistors, 120 transistors and 150 capacitors, it is required to

produce two types of circuits. Circuit type I requires 20 resistors 10 transistors and 10

capacitors whiles printed Circuit type II requires 10 resistors, 20 transistors and 30

capacitors. If type I circuit sells at Gh ₵5.00 each and type II at Gh ₵12.00 each. Apply

Simplex Algorithm to find out how many of each type should be made to get the

Maximum financial returns. [ 13 marks]

5.a. A foreman has four fitters and has been asked to deal with five jobs. The times for each job

are estimated as follows
