Part - II (Answer the following)

Q1. How smog is harmful to us?

When inhaled, smog irritates our airways, increasing

our risk of serious heart and lung diseases. These
health risks are why many cities monitor smog
levels. On a high ozone-alert day, for example, your
eyes and throat may burn, and you may cough and
wheeze.

Q2. You have been selected to talk on “Ozone

Layer and its protection” in the school
assembly.

a. Why should ozone layer be protected?

b. List two ways that would help in protection

of ozone layer.

A. Ozone layer helps in shielding the Earth from the

harmful UV radiations coming from sun. If ozone
layer gets depleted, UV radiations can directly reach
the earth. s surface and drastically affect the life on
earth.B. Avoid Using ODS

Reduce the use of ozone depleting substances. E.g.

avoid the use of CFCs in refrigerators and air
conditioners, replacing the halon based fire
extinguishers, etc.

Minimise the Use of Vehicles

The vehicles emit a large amount of greenhouse

gases that lead to global warming as well as ozone
depletion. Therefore, the use of vehicles should be
minimised as much as possible.
2.Use Eco-friendly Cleaning Products
Most of the cleaning products have chlorine and
bromine releasing chemicals that find a way into the
atmosphere and affect the ozone layer. These
should be substituted with natural products to
protect the environment.
3.Use of Nitrous Oxide should be Prohibited
The government should take actions and prohibit
the use of harmful nitrous oxide that is adversely
affecting the ozone layer. People should be made
aware of the harmful effects of nitrous oxide and
the products emitting the gas so that its use is
minimised at the individual level as well.

Q3. Can you suggest some changes in your

school which would make it environment
friendly?

a) Biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes

should be thrown into separate bins.

b) Electricity can be saved by switching off lights

and fans when not in use. Use water wisely and turn
off water taps, when not in use. Instead of
projectors use chalkboards so as to save energy.
Moreover, there should be more windows that allow
the natural light to come inside.

c) Install solar panels to generate electricity which

is used for various purposes such as computer labs,
fans, lights etc. instead of electricity generators
because the solar panel has no moving parts
whereas generators produce a high amount of
noise.

d) Do not throw the litter on the school campus. Use

dustbins to manage the litter.

e) Aware students about the benefits of plants and

encourage them to promote the practice of planting
more trees. Grow trees along the boundary wall.
