STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The desire to understand our nature is as basic as the need for survival, and
as primitive as life itself. Indeed, research is a manifestation of the human
necessity to grow, to seek, to look beyond.

It is with this belief that I am seeking admission into your graduate program
in Environmental Engineering. This is not only because the course is best
suited to my immediate career goals, but also because the university campus
promises to provide the perfect environment where I can hone my creative
faculties enough to make a meaningful contribution.

The quest for quality in every aspect of life is the cornerstone of human
evolution. Having excelled in science and math at school, it was natural for
me to choose Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as majors in post-
secondary school. Since it is Civil Engineering that brings about a continuous
improvement in the quality of living of the people and safe guards the
environment, I chose it as my undergraduate major. I have gained a
thorough understanding of the various facets of Civil Engineering and the
projects that I have undertaken have further enhanced my aptitude for
research.

I have a specific interest in Geographical Information System (GIS), a

powerful tool for natural resource management and many other fields.
Courses taken in GIS and AUTOCAD were of significant help in teaching me
various concepts, and emphasizing the fact that software is only a tool, which
must be used to best advantage by the engineer. I hope to use the tools I
acquire during this internship in my continuing study of our environment.

The IT revolution expanded my horizons and inspired me to upgrade my

skills in that direction. I took up courses in C, C++ and Visual Basic.
Throughout my school and undergraduate education, I have been a keen
participant in extra-curricular activities. Getting elected as the School Pupil
Leader (Head Boy) helped me hone my organizational and interpersonal
skills. During these years, I worked as an evaluator in Physics for an
institute, coaching students to get admission into the IIT. Apart from
academics I represented my college in inter college tournaments in cricket
and volleyball. I continue to be a member of the Helpage Society of India,
which provides palliative care to the terminally ill cancer patients.

The years of undergraduate education have been an enriching experience -

both academically and otherwise, and I am determined to maintain the high
levels of excellence throughout my career.

My immediate career objective is an M.S in environmental engineering – a

rapidly evolving field with an immense potential for research. I wish to follow
it up with a PhD, to pursue a career in research and experience the
excitement and satisfaction of being at the forefront of this vast expanding
field. The choice of a good university with a faculty dedicated to teaching and
research and an atmosphere conducive to learning, thus becomes extremely
necessary. After going through your brochure and website I found that
Kansas State University, with an extremely distinguished faculty, a milieu
replete with academic activity, and a graduate program which blends high
quality course work and research facilities at the cutting edge of every sub-
field, is a remarkably strong and attractive place to embark upon an
academic career. I believe the program offered will help me acquire the
versatility needed to reach my full potential as an engineer.

I would certainly value a Research or a Teaching Assistantship very much

because in addition to easing the financial burden on me, it would go a long
way in preparing me for a career in research and teaching. I look forward to
a challenging career in research, which may even be arduous and demanding
at times. But I am confident that with my sincerity and dedication, I will be
able to make a meaningful contribution to the ongoing research
developments and live up to the high standards expected off your university.

Given an opportunity, I shall strive to channel my unbridled efforts into more

productive avenues.
