THE ASIAN SCHOOL, KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN

GRADE - 6
SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY (2022-2023)
CH-4 SORTING MATERIALS INTO GROUPS

I. Explain the terms:

a) Hard materials – Materials which are difficult to compress are called hard materials. Eg: Iron
b) Soft materials – Materials which can be compressed or scratched easily are called soft materials.
Eg: Sponge

II. Answer the following:

1) What is classification?
Ans: The process of grouping objects based on some known criteria is called classification.

2) Why do we need to classify materials?

Ans: Dividing materials into groups make it convenient to study its properties.
If we know the properties of one member of a group, we can easily predict the properties of other
members of that group.

3) What decides which material should be used for making any object?
Ans: We choose a material to make an object depending on its properties and purpose for which the object is
to be used.

4) What are important properties of a material?

Ans: Some important properties of material are: -
a) Appearance- Eg: -lustrous, non-lustrous
b) Hardness
c) Softness
d) Solubility
e) Floatation in water
f) Transparency
These are the properties used to classify the material into group.

5) Why do some metals often lose their shine and appear dull?
Ans: Some metals often lose their shine and appear dull due to the action of air and moisture. It slowly reacts
with metal to form their oxides.
Eg-Iron rust

6) What is the importance of solubility of gases in water?

Ans: Oxygen dissolved in water is very important for the survival of aquatic plants and animals.

7) Difference between soluble and insoluble substance.

Ans: Soluble substance: - The substances which dissolve in water are called soluble substances.
Eg-salt, sugar

1
Insoluble substance: - The substances which does not dissolve in water are called insoluble substances.
Eg- sand, chalk powder
EXTRA QUESTIONS

1. Name five objects which can be made from wood.

2. Write any two properties of metals.
3. Why water is called a universal solvent?
4. ‘Grouping of objects helps the shopkeeper.’ Justify the statement.

ASSIGNMENT
(Assignment should be done in your classwork and must be uploaded in the google classroom)

1. Why are the handles of cooking utensils made from hard plastic or wood?
2. Why is a tumbler not made with a piece of cloth?
3. In ‘hide and seek’ do you hide behind a glass window or a wall? Why?

market. Shyam arranged all items systematically based on their similarities and differences. Ram did
not arranged the items. He just put them randomly according to the available space in his shop.
(a) What is the significance of grouping items?
(b) Suppose you are a grocer; how will you arrange items in your shop?
(c) Who do you think will be able to locate things in their shop easily-Ram or Shyam? Why?
(d) What values of Ram and Shyam are shown here?
