Action Research

Improving students' speaking English language level in 11 th using dialogue.

Background of the study

Language is a means of communication. It is a system for the expression of communication. It is


a system for the expression of meaning. Its primary function is for interaction and
communication it is used by human in order to know and understand each other. As we know
that god created human in different condition and character. So, they need to interact among
people. Speaking is the action of passing on information or expressing your thought and feelings
in spoken language. The term is also used in reference to the act or process of delivering
speeches or lectures (Sutjiati, 2018).

There are four skills in learning English they are listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Speaking is very important because speaking and human being cannot be separated from each
other. Speaking is used to express their ideas and to communicate to people in civilized world.
Students’ speaking problem can be solved by giving a lot chance to them for practicing English
either in the classroom or out of classroom. Practicing speaking English in the classroom should
be interested with appropriate technique in order to make students speaking skill can be
improved and the process of learning can be enjoyable. One of technique can be used in teaching
speaking is dialogue . In order to build the bridge, in the speaking activities, the teacher must
give them practice opportunity for purposeful communication in meaningful situation. It means
learning to speak in a second language will be facilitated when learners are actively engaged in
attempting to communicate.

There are several techniques used by the teacher for teaching speaking. like Role play,
collaborative work, storytelling, debate and so on. The techniques should be appropriate and
interesting to interest the students in teaching learning process. Among many of them dialogue is
one of the technique to improve the speaking competence of the learners/students. It helps
students practice in speech, pronunciation, intonation, stress and also improves vocabulary.
Dialogue is beneficial for the purposes of improving fluency and complexity of speech in
performing in a foreign language (Paolikara, 2018). It is instead a process that builds bridge of
confidence and promotes better understanding and more creative cooperation between the
learners in the classroom. This process will help to reduce the anxiety and hesitation and help to
more competence. It can also make situation more relax. For example talking about the
interesting topic with friends and group. Dialogue will be become appropriate technique in
improving speaking skill if the teacher and students implement well. . Interaction with class
fellows through dialogue is one of the effective ways to improve speaking skills as a foreign
learner at higher secondary level (Tanveer, 2021).

To conclude that teaching speaking really helps students succeed in speaking competence, but it
needs to be improved. The way to improve speaking skill is using dialogue technique in
classroom is really helpful to the students. This action research study is designed to improve
students’ speaking competence through dialogue. Dialogue is very important to give students the
opportunity to speak English in class and can help them overcome their nervousness when they
speak English ” (Rahmawati, 2013). So Dialogue is the right technique in improving speaking
skills if teachers and students can apply it well. While teaching I have found the problem of
speaking skills on the students ' competence level. So I have tried to carry out the action research
with the concern that how can I improve students' speaking competence level through the
dialogue.

Rational of the Study

Research Question

How can I improve students' speaking competence level in 11th through dialogue in Laboratory
secondary School Kathmandu, Nepal?

Objectives

• To enable the students to learn English language skills

• To enhance the confidence level of students to speak English language.

Problem Identification

I have been teaching English in Nepal Rastriya Chandraganga Secondary school for 6 years. I noticed that
most of the students in speaking class did not take part in speaking activities. They were nervous to
produce utterances in English in or out of the classroom. Because of the speaking anxiety, they were
unable to answer the questions in speaking test. I thought there were various challenges that hinder
students to deal with speaking skill. The students were not provided a lot of opportunity to speak in the
class. They were not encouraged to speak English using variety of speaking strategies. I thought I could
improve students’ speaking proficiency by using cooperative story telling strategy in classroom. In this
cycle of Action Research, I used 'cooperative story telling strategy' to improve speaking skill.
