QUIZ I ME203 Mechanics of Solids

1. A short, hollow, circular, cast-iron cylinder is to support an axial compressive load P = 580 kN. The
ultimate stress in compression for the material is σu = 240 MPa. It is decided to design the cylinder
with a wall thickness t of 25 mm and a factor of safety of 3.0 with respect to the ultimate strength.
Compute the minimum required outside diameter d of the cylinder.

2. An element in plane stress is subjected to stresses (σx = - 50 MPa, (σy = 10 MPa, and ζxy = -40 MPa,
as shown. Using Mohr's circle, determine (a) the stresses acting on an element oriented at an angle θ
= 45°, (b) the principal stresses, and (c) the maximum shear stresses.
