Chapter 7

A message from Gabelle

1 – Why didn’t Charles Darnay want Mr. Lorry to go Paris?
Mr. Lorry wanted to go to Paris to be of some help to Tellson’s Bank. Charles Darnay advised
him not to go because of the weather, a difficult journey, a changing country, Paris that may
not even be safe for anyone but Mr. Lorry insisted on going there.

2 – Who was the letter from? and what did it say?

Mr. Lorry received a letter from Monsieur Gabelle to Monsieur, the Marquis of Evermonde, of
France. Gabelle wanted to tell Charles that he was arrested in Paris and his house was burned
and he was accused of treason. He wanted Darnay’s help to speak for him as his trial was soon
to start.

3 – How did Charles Darnay feel after reading the letter?

He couldn’t refuse to help Gabelle who was an old servant and a good man. Darnay knew very
well that his uncle was responsible for many evil things. So he decided to leave his happy
family home with Lucie and to use his influence to help in the country of his birth.

4 – Why were French people looking hardly for Aristocrats?

A new law had been passed, everything belonging to aristocrats at that time went to the state,
all aristocrats were to leave France forever and all who returned were to be put to death.

5 – Where was Charles Darnay taken? And why? Describe the place?

Darnay was taken to the prison of La Force because there was a new law and previous crimes
against the poor in France. Aristocrats had no rights. The prison was a dark, dirty, poisonous
place. The rooms were full of prisoners men and women.

6 – “Why in the name of la Guillotine did you come back to Paris?” comment.

Monsieur Defarge said these words to Charles Darnnay who was arrested at the gates of
Paris. Defarge knew that Darnnay was Lucie’s husband so he hoped that Darnnay didn’t return
to Paris again to be killed by the Guillotine.
7 – “But I can be of some help to Tellson’s in Paris” comment.

Mr. Lorry said these words to Charles Darnay at his bank. He wanted to go to Paris to be of
some help to Tellson’s there. Charles Darnnay advised him not to go but Lorry insisted on
going.

8 – “I know the man I’ll take the letter to him “comment

Charles said these words to Mr. Lorry who received a letter, while he was at the bank, from a
man called Gabelle to an unknown person called ST. Evermonde. That person was Charles
Darnnay but no one knew him in England except Dr. Manette.

9 – Why does Dickens say that Charles was left as if he was dead?

It seemed to Darnnay that he was walking through the company of the dead. Ghosts that he
saw of beauty of pride of youth and of age. All were waiting to die. In his cell in prison,
Darnnay walked around measuring the size of it as if he were dead.
