ANALYSIS PROCEDURE 01/01/2011 Rev. No : 00

SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE

1. SCOPE

This procedure describes the testing method for Sodium Hypochlorite and can be'
expressed. as Available chlorine (as Cl) % or as Sodium Hypochlorite (as NaOCl) %.

1.1. QUALITY OF REAGENTS

Unless specified otherwise, pure chemical (AR or GR) and distilled water shall be used in .
tests.

2.. REAGENTS REQUIRED:

Standard 0.1 (N) Na2S203 solutions, 10% Acetic acid,' 10% Kl solution and 0.5%
starch solution. Refer Annexure-I for standard solution preparation & standardizing.

3. PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINATION OF AVAIiJABLE CHLORINE (as CI) %

: OR AS SODIUMHYPOCHLORITE (as NaOCI) %.

A known volume (say Mg) of the sample is carefully taken in a clean & dried 500ml
conical flask. Add 50 ml of distilled water, 10 ml of 10% KI & 10 ml of acetic acid.
I. Shake well and titrate against 0.1 (N) Na2S203 using starch as indicator (colour changes
from blue to colourless). Let the volume ofNa2S203 consued be V ml.

»< 4. CALCULATION

.Available chlorine (as CI) % = {(V X N XO.035)100}/ M61'

Sodium Hypochlorite (as NaOCI) %. = (V X N X 0.037f~ M

Where,'
V= Volume in ml of standard sodium thiosulphate solution consumed in titration,
N= Normality of standard sodium thiosulphate solution, land
M= Mass of sample
