PROFILE:

A Filipino scientist, known for his leading authority on plants. Dr. Quisumbing, a
renowned botanist, is a pioneer in the study of Philippine medicinal plants, to which he has made
contributions. Author of many taxonomic and morphological papers over 129 scientific articles
that were published both in the United States and abroad. One of these papers is ‘Medicinal
plants in the Philippines”, was published in 1951. His work, Medicinal Plants in the Philippines,
is the pioneer of all medicinal plant study in the nation.
Dr. Quisumbing, as Director of the National Museum, oversaw the restoration of the
Herbarium, which had been entirely destroyed during the war. The plant Saccolabium
Quisumbingii was named after him. He received the Distinguished Service Star in 1954 for his
outstanding contribution to the field of systematic botany.
