CHAPTER 4-Data handling
1. What are the tests used in statistical analysis? Distinguish between confidence interval,
confidence limit and confidence level
(5 marks)

2. Replicate samples of a silver alloy are analyzed and determined to contain 95.67, 95.6,
95.71 and 95.60 % Ag. Calculate
(i) the standard deviation.
(ii) the standard deviation of the mean.
(iii) the relative standard deviation of the mean
(iv) (in percent) of the individual results.
(8 marks)

3. A ship of copper from Chile was purchased by a local metal refiner. The analysis
certificate, made out while the ship was being loaded, showed that % Cu = 14.66 with a
standard deviation of 0.07 % for 5 measurements. When the ore arrived at the refinery, it
was analyzed with the following results: % Cu :14.58, 14.61, 14.69 and 14.64. Should the
refiner accept the ore?
(8 marks)
4. Table A shows the replicate calcium determinations on a limestone sample using atomic
absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and a new colorimetric method were reported. Is
there a significant difference in the precision of the two methods? Which method should
be considered for limestone analysis if a precision is needed with low cost of analysis
price.

CHAPTER 5- Stoichiometric Calculation
5. 600 mg of pure sodium oxalate, Na2C2O4, was dissolved in acid and titrated with a
potassium permanganate solution according to the reaction equation below:
MnO4- + 5 C2O 42- + 16 H+ 2 Mn2+ + 10 CO2 (g) + 8 H2O
The end point was reached after adding 34.00 mL of titrant. Calculate the molarity
of the KMnO4. Given: MW of Na2C2O4 is 134 g/mol.
(6 marks)

6. A solution is prepared by mixing 4.00 mmol of SnCl2 with 8.00 mmol of FeCl3 and
diluting to 500 mL. The reagent reacts according to the following equation:
2 Fe3+ + Sn2+ = 2 Fe2+ + Sn4+ , K eq = 9.20 x 1020
Calculate the concentration of Fe3+ remaining in the solution at equilibrium.
(6 marks)
7. An ore is analyzed for the manganese content by converting the manganese to Mn3O4
and weighing it. If a 1.52 g sample yields Mn3O4 weighing 0.126 g,
(i) What would be the percent Mn2O3 in the sample?
(ii) What is the percent Mn?
Given the At. Wt. of Mn = 54.9 and O = 16 g/mol
