Question 1:
Calculate the materials and cost for 25 cu m of concrete of following proportions
I. 1: 2: 4
II. 1: 3: 6
III. 1: 4: 8
Coarse aggregate = Rs 300 per cu m
Sand = Rs 150 per cu m
Cement = 1000 per bag (CLO 2), (10).
Solution:
Volume of wet concrete = 25 m3
Volume of dry concrete = 25 m3 * 1.54
= 38.5 m3
(a) 1:2:4
Sum of proportions = 1+2+4 = 7

CEMENT:

Cement = 1/7 * 38.5 = 5.5 m3

1 bag of cement = 0.035m3

No. of cement bags = 5.5 /0.035

No. of cement bags = 157.14 ≈ 158 bags

Cost of cement = 158 * 1000

= Rs. 158,000

SAND:

Sand = 2/7 * 38.5 = 11 m3

Cost of sand = 11 * 150

= Rs. 1650

COARSE AGGREGATE:

Coarse Aggregate = 4/7 * 38.5 = 22 m3

Cost of c. aggregate = 22 * 300

= Rs. 6600
Total material cost = Rs. 166,250

(b) 1:3:6
Sum of proportions = 1+3+6 = 10

CEMENT:

Cement = 1/10 * 38.5 = 3.85 m3

1 bag of cement = 0.035m3

No. of cement bags = 3.85 /0.035

No. of cement bags = 110 bags

Cost of cement = 110 * 1000

= Rs. 110,000

SAND:

Sand = 3/10 * 38.5 = 11.55 m3

Cost of sand = 11.55 * 150

= Rs. 1732.5 ≈ Rs. 1733

COARSE AGGREGATE:

Coarse Aggregate = 6/10 * 38.5 = 23.1 m3

Cost of c. aggregate = 23.1 * 300

= Rs. 6930

Total material cost = Rs. 118,663

(c) 1:4:8

Sum of proportions = 1+4+8 = 13

CEMENT:

Cement = 1/13 * 38.5 = 2.96 m3

1 bag of cement = 0.035m3

No. of cement bags = 2.96 /0.035

No. of cement bags = 84.57 ≈ 85 bags

Cost of cement = 85 * 1000

= Rs. 85,000

SAND:

Sand = 4/13 * 38.5 = 11.85 m3

Cost of sand = 11.85 * 150

= Rs. 1777.5 ≈ Rs. 1778

COARSE AGGREGATE:

Coarse Aggregate = 8/13 * 38.5 = 23.69 m3

Cost of c. aggregate = 23.69 * 300

= Rs. 7107

Total material cost = Rs. 93,885

Question 2:

A room has a clear dimension of 3.5m x 7.5m. It has an R.C.C slab as shown in figure 1. Calculate
steel in kg for given slab and prepare bar bending schedule. (CLO 2),

(10)

Solution:
Steel in slab:
Main Bars:

L= 3.5 + 0.23 + 0.23 – 2(clear cover) + 2(hooks i.e., 6d)

= 3.96 – 2(0.05) + 12(0.012)

= 4.004 m

No. of bars 7.5 – 2(0.05) +2 (0.23))

= (2∗.15) +1
= 27.2 ≈ 28 bars

Total length = 28 x 4.004

= 112.112 m
Bent Up Bars:

For 45o bent:

X = 0.12 – 2(clear cover) – 2(half dia. of bar)

= 0.12 – 2(0.02) – 2(0.5*0.012)

= 0.068 m

L= 3.5 + 0.23 + 0.23 – 2(clear cover) + 2(hooks i.e., 6d) + 2(0.45x)

= 3.96 – 2(0.05) + 12(0.012) + 2(0.45*0.068)

= 4.0652 m

7.5 – 2(0.05) +2 (0.23))

No. of bars
= (2∗.15)

= 26.2 ≈ 27 bars

Total length = 27 x 4.0652

= 109.7604 m

Distribution Bars:

L = 7.5 + 0.23 + 0.23 – 2(clear cover) + 2(hooks i.e., 6d)

= 7.96 – 2(0.05) + 12(0.006)

= 7.932 m

Bottom layer:

No. of bars = 3.5 – 2(0.05) +2 (0.23))

.18 +1
= 22.44 ≈ 23 bars
Total length = 23 x 7.932

= 182.436 m
Top layer:

No. of bars (0.45)+ (0.23)− (0.05)−(𝑥/ tan 45)

.18 +1
=
= 4.12 ≈ 5 bars
For both sides = 5*2

= 10 bars

Total length of bottom distribution bars = 10*7.932

= 79.32 m

Total Steel:

Total steel (12mm bar) = 112.112 + 109.7604

= 221.8724 m

Total steel (6mm bars) = 182.436 + 79.32

= 261.756 m

Total weight of steel (12mm) = Unit weight * length * area

= 7850*221.8724 * (π*0.0122/4)

=196.98 kg

Total weight of steel (6mm) = Unit weight * length * area

= 7850*261.756* (π*0.0062/4)

= 58.1 kg

(ii) Percentage volume of steel reinforcement in beam:

For weight of 1 cu m of steel is assumed as 7850 kg.

Volume of concrete = 1.59 cu m

Weight of steel = (185.66 + 52.49)

= 238.15 kg
238.15∗100
Percentage of steel
= 7850∗1.59

= 1.91 say 2%

(iii) Cost of beam per meter:

Length of beam without bearing = 10 meters

Total cost of beam = Rs. 32100

Hence the cost of beam per meter is Rs. 3210/-
