*P3a. Description:
Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI) discovered this site during the course of an intensive pedestrian survey whose goal was to
conclusively define the boundary of CA-SBR-4969 (cf. Becker et al. n.d.). This site consists of a light density lithic scatter on desert
pavement south of Bicycle Wash. The lithic scatter consists of basalt and chalcedony flakes and shatter as well as two lithic
reduction loci (artifact concentrations), and five bifaces or biface fragments. The desert pavement is well formed with moderate to
heavy patination. Some rubifaction on flaked material was observed. The site has been moderately to severaly impacted by vehicle
traffic and military activites. The impacts have affected the pavement surfaces, crushed natural basalt and other igneous rock
cobbles, and damged or crushed lithic debitage. Both artifact concentrations contained basalt debitage and bifaces (see Artifact
Record). Two shovel test pits (STPs) were excavated at the site to ascertain potential for subsurface cultural deposits. Each unit
was 0.5 x 0.5 m and excavated to 30 cm below the site surface. No artifacts below 3 cm from the surface were recovered.
Rubifaction analysis was conducted using several samples taken from debitage, cores and natural cobbles.

*A5. Cultural Constituents:
The site consists of a small, light density lithic scatter of basalt. The field crew observed a total of 127 flakes from core
reduction and indeterminate reduction. In addition, SRI recorded five basalt bifaces or biface fragments (PD’s 8038, 8039, 8040,
8044, 8099) (PD refers to “Provenience Designation”, a term SRI uses to denote point provenienced artifacts, artifact
concentrations, test units, site datums, and features). Field crew took rubifaction samples from flaking debitage from each artifact
concentration and natural cobbles. Two artifact concentrations were recorded.
Artifact Concentration 1 (PD 8036) is a basalt lithic reduction locale consisting of 12 flakes from core and indeterminate
reduction in a 2 x 1.5 meter area. One biface was recorded (PD 8038). Field crew took rubifaction samples. One shovel test unit
(PD 8095), 0.5 x 0.5 m, was excavated in a portion of the concentration, to a depth of 30 cm below the surface. No subsurface
remains below 3 cm were found.
Artifact Concentration 2 (PD 8037) is a basalt lithic reduction locale consisting of 32 flaking debitage pieces from core and
indeterminate reduction in a 3 x 1.5 meter area. One basalt biface (PD 3039) was recorded. Rubifaction samples were taken.
SRI excavated a second shovel test unit (PD 8101), 0.5 x 0.5 meter in the basalt scatter to a depth of 30 cm below the
surface. A profile was drawn for this STP (see Continuation Sheet). No artifacts were recovered from below the surface. The field
crew took rubifaction samples during site recording and also during test excavation.

Rubifaction Samples:
Artifact Concentration 1 (PD 8036) is a light density lithic reduction locale composed of one basalt biface and 12 basalt flakes from
core reduction and indeterminate reduction. The concentration is 2 x 1.5 m in size. The biface found there appears to have been a
core flake with thinning flakes on both sides. The biface has a plano-convex cross-section, and stage 1/2 reduction. A test
excavation unit measuring 0.5 x 0.5 m (PD 8101) was excavated over a part of this concentration to a depth of 30 cm below the
surface. No cultural material was recovered below 3 cm of the surface.
Artifact Concentration 2 (8037) is a light density lithic reduction locale composed of one basalt biface and 32 basalt flakes from core
reduction and indeterminate reduction. Many flakes have been broken by vehicle travel. The concentration is 2 x 3 meters in size.
The biface appears to have been a stage 2/3 reduction with a lenticular cross-section. Rubifaction was observed on the biface and
some of the flakes.
