*P3a. Description:
Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI) discovered this site during the course of an intensive pedestrian survey whose goal was to
conclusively define the current boundaries of site CA-SBR-4969 (cf. Becker et al. n.d.). This site is a small, light density lithic
scatter of basalt flaking debris and one basalt lithic reduction locus on moderately formed desert pavement. A total of 53 core
reduction flakes and 12 indeterminate flakes were observed. The desert pavement has been affected by vehicle traffic (broken
flakes, wheel ruts, tank tracks) and military activities. No tools, diagnostics or soil depth was observed. Rubifaction analysis was
conducted using samples taken from debitage and natural cobbles from the site.

*A5. Cultural Constituents:

The site consists of a small, light density lithic scatter of basalt along with an artifact concentration. Field crew observed a total of
65 flakes from core reduction and indeterminate reduction, but no cores or tools. SRI examined flaking debitage and natural
cobbles in the field for a rubifaction study.

Artifact Concentration 1 (PD 8017) - a basalt lithic reduction locus consisting of 25 basalt core reduction flakes in a 1.5 x 1 m
area. Personnel from SRI did not record any cores or tools. Rubifaction samples were taken from the area.

*A7. Site Condition:  Good  Fair  Poor : Vehicle traffic (tracks, ruts, crushed artifacts) and military activities throughout
*A8. Nearest Water: Bicycle Wash (intermittent), 728 m southwest
*A9. Elevation: 804.77 m./ 2640.31 ft.
A10. Environmental Setting:
Mojave Desert, high desert biome, creosote and rabbit brush predominate, small fauna predominate, desert pavement on alluvial
fan with many small washes and rills intersecting the desert pavement. The desert pavement is moderately well-formed with
some varnish on surface cobbles and gravel, all rocks are igneous - basalts, rhyolites, and granites. The site is located on a
nearly flat surface, less than 1° slope and a southern to southeastern aspect.

A11. Historical Information:

This site is located in a drawn boundary for CA-SBR-4969 from the 1982 survey for the Gallant Eagle Exercise (Robarchek et al.
1984) although this actual site boundary for that site was never fully delineated.

*A12. Age:  Prehistoric  Protohistoric  1542-1769  1769-1848  1848-1880  1880-1914  1914-1945

 Post 1945  Undetermined

A13. Interpretations:
This site is the result of prehistoric desert pavement surface quarrying common in the area and within the Mojave Desert region
at large. Given the presence of lithic core reduction flakes and the absence of biface reduction flakes and groundstone (both of
the latter may indicate intensive occupation of a site). The evidence suggests that this site was intermittently and briefly occupied
for quarrying only. Rubifaction studies may eventually elucidate better relative dates for sites such as these, but currently, given
the lack of subsurface cultural deposits and diagnostics, as well as a brief and sporadic site occupation, SRI argues that this site
does meet any of the criteria of the NRHP, specifically criterion D. Most, if not all, of the data potential for this site was exploited
during its initial recording. SRI recommends that this site is not eligible for listing on the NRHP.

General Comments/ Notes:

This site consists of a surface scatter of lithic debitage and one reduction locus (Artifact Concentration 1). Due to the paucity of
material remains, lack of diversity in the observed assemblage and features, as well as damage to the surface of the site from
military vehicles and exercises, SRI contends that the data potential of this site is limited. The potential information from this site
was extracted during the present site recordation and in-field analysis. Therefore SRI recommends that this site lacks the potential
for future scientific contributions under criterion D of the NRHP, such that the site is not eligible for listing on the NRHP.
