*P3a. Description:
Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI) discovered this site during the course of an intensive pedestrian survey whose goal was to conclusively
define the current boundaries of site CA-SBR-4969 (cf. Becker et al. n.d.). This site consists of a lithic scatter on a sloping desert pavement
terrace above Bicycle Wash. The lithic scatter consists of four basalt lithic reduction loci, a scatter of basalt and chalcedony flaking debitage,
and two biface fragments and a core. A total of 235 flakes were recorded from core reduction, biface reduction and indeterminate reduction.
The bifaces were basalt, and four cores or core fragments – one chert unifaical core, one chert multidirectional core fragment, and two basalt
multidirectional core fragments. The desert pavment was well formed and the cobbles were heavily patinated. The site has been impacted by
military vehicle travel over the entire site. Two shovel test pits (STPs) were excavated within the site to ascertain potential for subsurface
cultural deposits. Each unit was 0.5 x 0.5 m and excavated to 30 cm below the site surface. No artifacts lower than 3 cm below the surface were
found in these STPs. Rubifaction analysis was conducted at this site with several samples taken from debitage, cores and natural cobbles.
During recording of the site, the field crew noted the presence of a circular area that had been recently excavated. The disturbed area is near the
center of the site and measures approximately 4 x 5 m horizontally (see sketch map).

Reliability of Determination: High Medium Low Explain: Use of presence/ absence of artifacts, and desert
pavement land formation to find site boundaries, edge of the landform to the north and east
Limitations: Restricted access Paved/built over Site limits incompletely defined Disturbances Vegetation
Other (Explain): edge of landform
A2. Depth: 0-3 cm None Unknown Method of Determination: no cultural subsurface, two shovel test units
were excavated, no subsurface remains below 3 cm
*A3. Human Remains: Present Absent Possible Unknown (Explain): No subsurface materials observed
Artifact Concentration 1 (PD 8006) is a basalt lithic reduction locale consisting of 34 flakes from core and indeterminate reduction
in a 1 x 1.5 m area. The field crew did not record any cores or tools. SRI took rubifaction samples from the concentration. A
shovel test pit (STP-2; PD 8114) was excavated adjacent to the core and Artifact Concentration 1 on well-formed, well-patinated
desert pavement to a depth of 30 cm below the surface. No subsurface remains were recovered.
Artifact Concentration 2 (PD 8007) is a basalt lithic reduction locale consisting of 46 flakes from core and indeterminate reduction
in a 1.5 x 1.5 m area. The field crew did not record any cores or tools. SRI took rubifaction samples from the concentration.
Artifact Concentration 3 (PD 8010) is a basalt lithic reduction locale consisting of 40 flakes from core and indeterminate reduction
in a 1 x 2 m area. One basalt biface, proximal portion was recorded. SRI took rubifaction samples from the concentration.
Artifact Concentration 4 (PD 8011) is a basalt and chert lithic reduction locale consisting of 95 flakes from core and indeterminate
reduction in 2 x 2 m area. Three cores or core fragments were recorded, two bifacial and one multidirectional. SRI took
rubifaction samples from the concentration. The field crew excavated one shovel test pit (STP-1; PD 8011), 0.5 x 0.5 m on a
portion of this concentration. No subsurface remains were recovered below 3 cm the surface. The STP was excavated down to
20 cm below the surface.

A13. Interpretations:
This site relates to prehistoric desert pavement surface quarrying indicative to the area and to the greater region. The presence
of lithic core reduction flakes and the absence of biface reduction flakes or groundstone which may indicate intensive cultural
occupation of the site, we believe that this site was an intermittently and briefly occupied site relating to quarry activities.
Rubifaction studies may elucidate better relative dates for sites such as these, but given the lack of subsurface cultural deposits,
no diagnostics and a brief and sporadic site occupation we believe that this site does meet any of the criteria of the NRHP,
specifically criterion D. Most, if not all the data potential for this site was exploited during the initial recording and subsequent test
excavation. SRI recommends that this site is not eligible for listing on the NRHP.

Rubifaction Samples:
This site consists of a surface lithic scatter, four discrete artifact concentrations resulting from lithic reduction, and several cores or
tools. During recording of the site the field crew did not observe any sub-surface anomalies that may indicate a feature. Most of the
artifacts laid on the desert pavement surface or were partially buried. A dug-out pit on the site (made recently) offered a shallow
profile of the subsurface. Observation of the profile showed no indication of subsurface cultural resources. Two STPs were
excavated and neither showed evidence of subsurface materials. The site has been moderately disturbed by military vehicles and
military activities such as on-site excavation for a gun placement/ fox hole. In sum, we believe that although the site has some
complex surface artifact concentrations, we found no indication of subsurface cultural features or diagnostics. Therefore, this site
does not offer new information about prehistory under criterion D of the NRHP and its data potential is limited. In addition, this site
has been heavily impacted by continuous and vigorous use by the U.S. Army vehicles and training. This site does not meet the
integrity criteria for eligibility for nomination to the NRHP. SRI recommends that this site is not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
