Abstract: -
Interview skills are the skills which help you get a job. Many people have a great
academic record but when it comes to interview, they make some mistakes. The
interview skills not only just help to get a job but the skills you learn will always help in
many situations. To learn the interview skills, one should know the types of interviews to
judge how to deal with this situation. Interview skills include polite answers, patience,
quick witted, confidence etc. Interview skills are the soft skills which should be learned
by practicing. Interview skills are not only shown Infront of the interviewer but it involves
a whole process before and after the interview.

What is Interview?
Interview is the meeting with the recruiter and the applicant for assessment of the
candidate. It can be the only one person assessing the candidate or a whole pane
involve in the assessment process. The assessment process take place on the basis of
candidate's qualification and skills etc. The employer asks many questions to assess
the ability of the candidate. The interviews may take place face to face, on phone call or
via video conference but till now face to face interview method is the most popular type
of interview.

Types of Interviews: -
There are different types of Interviews which are as follows:

1. Screening Interview: -
Screening interview is the interview conduct for screening purpose mean to select the
qualified candidates for the actual interview. It can be face to face or on the interview. It
can be conducted by the hiring manager or the assistant or any other employee in the
HR department.

2. Selection Interview: -
Selection interview is also called as second interview. It is conduct after the screening
interview and short-listed candidates are assessed for the position. It is the stricter
interview than the screening one. In this interview, the hiring company more carefully
scrutinize the candidates and make sure that the candidate hired for the position is a
best suited person for the job.

3. One-on-one Interview: -
One-on-one interview is conducted by the single interviewer. To succeed in this type of
interview, one should build an understanding with the interviewer. Keep up with the
interviewer's energy, don’t be over enthusiastic nor show the sign that you want to end
this interview as soon as possible. Always put on a gentle smile and answer the
questions politely yet confidently. Make a good impression in a short time.

4. Round-Robin Interview: -
Round-robin interview is a series of one-on-one interview with the multi-interviewer in
the same company on the same day. Round- robin interview is the technique mostly
used by the client company. The person has to go through the interviews one after
another. To keep up with the interviewer, the person has to maintain their energy
throughout the day. Make sure to give the consistent answers to each interviewer
because at the end of the interview the interviewers will scrutinize your answers through
discussion with each other. To show your interest ask the relevant questions from each
interviewer even if you have got the answer from the previous one.

5. Panel Interview: -
The panel interview is conduct by the panel of two or more interviewers. The purpose of
this type of interview is to have a multiple opinion for the assessment of a candidate.
One should deal with this type of interview in a confident manner. Make eye contact
with all the interviewers and involve all of them by eye contact. Sometimes the most of
the questions are directed by one interviewer but he may be not a final decision maker.

6. Stress Interview: -
Stress interview is designed for the assessment of candidate's response in a stressful
situation. The interviewer will intimidate you by pressurizing you. The purpose of stress
interview is to know that how the candidate deal with stressful situations. The
interviewer will deliberately make situation hard for you by sarcasm, arguable questions
or long awkward silence. To dealt with stress interview, you should be calm and also
identify that you are going through the stress interview. Don’t rush to answer, take your
time to think about it and then answer. Clarify if you have any confusion.

7. Irregular Interview: -
Irregular interview is the non-traditional method of interview. To evaluate the candidate
performance many companies, arrange irregular interviews. They may be conduct on
field, lunch or dinner etc. The key to succeed in this type of interview is be yourself.
Always remember that we are being interviewed so follow the rules of a standard
interview. Always stay professional. Engage in the conversation and ask questions.

8. Telephone Interview: -
Telephone interview is the common and frequently used method. It is more cost-
effective and far easier than other interviews. It is commonly used in the screening
interview. These are often not scheduled. The technique to attend the telephone is
always be prepare. When you apply for a job than prepare for the call at any time. Don’t
answer call when you are driving or in the loud places. Check your mails daily and make
sure to respond within 24 hours.

9. Group Interview: -
Group interviews are arranged for assessing your team work abilities. This involves
many employees of the Campany including hiring manager, your superiors and potential
peers. In this type of interview, the employer can see how well your communicating
skills are.

10. Behavioral Interviews: -


In behavioral interview, the employer assesses your performance from your behavior.
They assess by asking about your last employment experience. They ask questions like
how your skills; abilities would be beneficial for the organization. Many employers ask
behavioral question by giving certain situations and assess you by the answer.

11. Audition Interview: -


Audition interview is arranged to judge you by live performance and made a decision of
hiring. Candidate for teaching asked to give a demo lecture, chef may be asked make a
dish, computer programmer may ask to write code etc. In audition interview hiring
manager serves as audience.

Interview Skills: -
Interview skills are the skills used in an interview. These skills involve the techniques
used for the interview like, talk politely, stay calm and confident, don’t be nervous,
prepare yourself etc. In today's competitive world, one should know the skills of
interview. Interviewing is a skill in which your ability to interact with the interviewer
and to articulate your thoughts are factors that are just as important in getting the job
as are the qualifications listed on your resume.

Interview Skills to Win a Job: -


These are divided into three stages: before the interview, during the interview and after
the interview.

 What to Do Before the Interview: -


In this stage the candidate should prepare himself for interview in following ways:
 Research the Company: -
Gather the information about company's background and their work style. Gather as
much information as you can to ensure the fact that you have a basic knowledge of a
company and the position you have applied for. This technique will not only shoe your
interest but will also help in the interview.

 Practice the Answers for Interview: -


Practice the answers of expected questions. Practice the possible situations and your
response in that situation.

 Read the Job Description: -


Read the job description carefully to ensure about the skills employer looking for and
practice them to show in your interview.

 Prepare an Appropriate Dress: -


Prepare a suitable dress for the interview. Although the interviewer does not care
whether your dress is branded or not but if you dress up properly than it will leave a
good impression.

 Hold a Dress Rehearsal: -


Ask a friend or family member to conduct a mock interview. Record this mock interview
and review it to see your performance and correct your mistakes from posture, eye
contact to your speaking style. You should give attention to even a small detail.

 During Interview: -
During interview you have to be careful to not make any mistake as it will be the final
impression of you in front of the interviewer. Follow the steps are as under:

 Make a Good First Impression: -


Your interview makes a first impression of you in front of employer so make sure to
arrive on time, greet everyone you meet politely. Wait patiently for your turn.

 Give Right Answers; -


Make sure to give right answers to the employer. Think before you give any answer
even if you are sure about that. Answer confidently but don’t appear to be over
confident. If the employer asks any question which you have prepare before refrain
yourself to give a robotic answer.
 Ask Questions: -
Ask question from the recruiter about company and your role which you are confused
about. Think of the interview as a conversation not as interrogation. This will help you to
be calmer.

 Get your Tone Right: -


In the interview, you should be polite but be professional. Use the right terminologies.
And avoid using slang language. Pay attention to your tone, it should be polite but
confident.

 Pay Attention to your Body Language: -


Body language plays an important role in interview. Make sure to make eye contact, sit
comfortably but confidently in your chair and always put a smile on your face. Don’t
make hand and leg moments too much as it shows how nervous you are.

 After Interview: -
 Thank everyone: -
Before leaving thank every interviewer with a smile and greet them before leaving. Also
told them that you will wait for their response.

 Follow Ups: -
Follow up is usually used to check the response of the company. In this candidate
usually use this to thank every interviewer and gives some additional information to
make the decision easier for recruiter. And ask about their response on an interview.

 Don’t Pause your Job Search: -


Don’t pause the job search after one interview. Continue your job search until you found
one. After every interview, keep in mind both success and failure.

Conclusion: -
Interview skills should be learnt time to time. Preparation is essential before an
interview. Research the company, prepare answers for likely questions, plan your
journey, and role-play your performance. During the interview, try to make a good
first impression, pay close attention to your tone and body language, and ask
questions. Listen attentively to make sure you're answering exactly what you're
being asked. Once the interview is over, send a thank-you message to everyone
involved in the process. Whether you secure the position or not, ask for feedback
to learn from the experience, and to improve your interview skills for the future.
