PRECAUTION
1. Check that the battery cables are connected to the correct terminals.

2. Disconnect the battery cables when the battery is given a quick charge.

3. Do not perform tests with a high voltage insulation resistance tester, such as a
megohmmeter.

4. Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running.

5. Check that the charging cable nuts are tightened on terminal B of the generator and the
engine room relay block.

6. CHECK V-RIBBED BELT If the voltage is below the specification, charge the battery.

T he belt is worn out to the extent that the c ords are
expos ed.
T he belt has c hunks mis s ing from the ribs .

(b) C hec k that the belt fits properly in the ribbed grooves .

HINT:

Check with your hand to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of
the groove on the bottom to the pulley. If it has slipped out, replace

the V-ribbed belt. Install a new V-ribbed belt correctly.

7. VISUA LLY CHECK GENERA TOR WIRING


(a) C hec k that the generator wiring is in good c ondition.

I f the c ondition is not good, repair or replac e the generator wire.

8. LISTEN FOR A BNORMA L NOISES FROM GENERA TOR


(a) C hec k that there is no abnormal nois e from the generator while the engine is running.

I f there is abnormal nois e, replac e the pulley or generator.

9. CHECK CHA RGE WA RNING LIGHT CIRCUIT


(a) T urn the ignition s witc h to O N . C hec k that the c harge warning light c omes on.

(b) Start the engine and c hec k that the light goes off.

I f the light does not operate as s pec ified, troubles hoot the c harge warning light c irc uit.

10. CHECK CHA RGING CIRCUIT WITHOUT LOA D

(a) A c c ording to the following proc edure, c onnec t an ammeter


and voltmeter as s hown in the illus tration.

(1 ) D is c onnec t the wire from terminal B of the generator


and c onnec t it to the negative (- ) lead of the ammeter.

(2 ) C onnec t the pos itive (+) lead of the ammeter to


terminal B of the generator.

(3 ) C onnec t the pos itive (+) lead of the voltmeter to the


pos itive (+) terminal of the battery.
(4 ) G round the negative (- ) lead of the voltmeter.

(b) C hec k the c harging c irc uit.

(1 ) While keeping the engine s peed at 2 0 0 0 rpm, c hec k the readings on the ammeter and
voltmeter.

I f the res ults are not as s pec ified, replac e the generator as s embly.

HINT:

If the battery is not fully charged, the ammeter reading may be more than the standard current.

11. CHECK CHA RGING CIRCUIT WITH LOA D


(a) Keep the engine s peed at 2 0 0 0 rpm, turn on the high beam headlights , and turn the heater blower
s witc h to the "H I " pos ition.

(b) C hec k the reading on the ammeter.

Standard c urrent:
3 0 A or more

I f the ammeter reading is les s than the s tandard c urrent, replac e the generator as s embly.

HINT:

If the battery is fully charged, the ammeter reading may be less than the standard current. In this case, increase
electrical load by operating devices such as the wiper motor and rear window defogger. Then, recheck the
reading on the ammeter.
