Alex’s problem is that he got tied up at work and he was late for a study group. When he arrived at
the study group, the second speaker and Marta had already finished reviewing their notes in
preparation for the upcoming exam and Alex wasn’t able to contribute anything to their discussion.
There are two options that Alex can take. First, he can get off of work on time and be punctual for
meetings. This is problematic for Alex as his boss makes him work overtime. Second, he can take
better notes and not rely on his classmates/not ask for his classmates to give him extra help,
which will mean he will have to study alone.
2. p 434   (2015-2017)
Wendy's problem is that the male student and his roommate are cramming for their final exams
late into the night and are playing really loud music to keep them awake, which is keeping her up
as well. She suggests that the male student goes to bed because she is certain that getting
adequate sleep on the night before the test can help them to perform better on the exam. This is a
problem because they think studying is more important. She also advises them to drink coffee to
keep them from falling asleep instead of playing loud music, but the male dislikes/can’t bear/can’t
stand the bitter taste of coffee.
3. p 656  (2015-2017)
The woman’s computer is infected with a virus and therefore can’t access a saved file of the report
on her computer that has to be submitted within one hour. The other student mentions that he
can’t promise he would be able to repair her computer in such a short time. He also gives her two
suggestions. Firstly, she can take a saved draft on her floppy disc to the computer center and use
the next hour to quickly adjust it so it is good enough to be submitted. This may be a problem
because she knows that one hour isn’t long enough to change the content. Secondly, the woman
can just let her professor know what happened to her computer in hopes that he will give her an
extension.
4. Briefly summarize the man’s two options for the holidays. Then state which solution you would
recommend. Explain the reasons for your recommendation.

Sample answer 1. The man has two options for his vacation. Firstly, under the college’s new work
experience scheme, he will have the chance to work in a law firm and shadow experienced lawyers, which
will help him to learn knowledge that can be put into practice when he enters the workforce in the future.
This will equip him with the knowledge and relevant experience so he will be more employable upon
graduation. The man points out that he can’t take part in the scheme because he wishes to take a two-
week revision course on the holidays and be able to retake his exam on family law. The reason he wishes to
do so is because the students’ final grade is based on the exam results for all the units they have taken and
he wishes to get as high a score as possible. By joining the revision course, which is free of charge, he’ll be
able to have deeper discussions with his tutors about aspects of family law that he can’t get his mind
around.
Sample answer 2. The man has two options for the holidays. The first is the one the girl was
recommending. The college has arranged for students to get work experience at a law firm. Here, the
students will be able to learn on-the-job skills. The man’s other option is to attend a two-week course so
that he can retake one of his exams: a family law exam. Both options have advantages. The work
experience will be useful because it will help students learn what it is like to work in a real law firm, and it
may help them find a job in the future. Not only that, but they may be able to use what they’ve learned in
future assignments at the college. A third advantage is that the work is paid, and most students are short
of money, so I expect this would be a real bonus, because it’s difficult for students to find temporary jobs
in the college holidays. However, the exam option is also beneficial. If the man went on the course, he’d be
able to get a better grade in his exam, and this will boost his final mark overall. Plus, he will be able to
spend more time talking to the tutors, which would be useful for him, because he missed a lot of classes
last term because of his illness. Thirdly, the course doesn’t cost anything, so the man may as well take
advantage of it.

Knock sth out: 使(設備等)無用;毀壞/power outage: 停電 blackout: 燈火管制時期;斷電時期;斷
電,停電/you’re telling me: 那還用說!你說的太對了!/hassle: 麻煩,困難/soaked: 濕透的,浸透
的/cross one’s mind: 一個念頭掠過腦海
The woman has a problem in that the storm caused a power shortage/blackout in several buildings on
campus./The woman is in trouble because a storm resulted in a blackout in the woman’s dormitory. Thus,
the woman won’t be able to use her computer to finish typing up the history paper that is due the next
day. The first possibility that the man mentions is finishing her work in the library. The problem with this
option is that it is raining and she is afraid that if she takes her computer and textbooks across campus,
they would all get soaked. The man also recommends that the woman talk to her professor about this
dilemma and ask him for an extension. The risk with this approach is that the professor might possibly say
that doing so is unfair to other students and deny the extension to her.
